  1. What company are the best producers of a mid to top end rimfire rifle?

Moving from shooting air rifles to the rimmies what are the best?

In the air rifle world (in my opinion) Weihrauch/Theoben make the best recoiling rfiles, Daystate/Air arms pneumatics!

Everyone seems to own a CZ, i hear they are good? I could go on about others. I know there are always alot of good manufacturers, but i want to know who are the best in your opinion.

    Are Anschutz the kings?

    :lol::lol: :blink:

  2. Any idea where I can get a replacement fore end for my FIAS ? It looks exactly the same as the Browning Medallist. I only really need the wood as mine has developed a small split.

  4. Please forgive my ignorance, but what is it about the owl that brings the crows in?

I think the crow's see the owl as a threat so mob them! I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong?

That is correct, they are nothing but bullys and will take on any bird of prey.

Especially if they appear to of made a kill, once out of the scene they turn on each other and fight for the food.

They rely on their intimidating numbers and are pure evil!!!!!!!!

Hence the name given to a gathering of crows.......... D2D

  9. I have found nail varnish remover to work very well both on dogs as well as ferrets, dont under estimate the problem of infection if you dont get them out cleanly, I have a scar on my calf the size of a 10p from a tick years ago and it was very sore for months. D2D

If i were you I`d get the Dr. to check you for Lymes disease ASAP.

I did go to my GP at the time as it became infected, the scar is what was left after it was treated and healed, hence dont underestimate a tick bite  D2D

  10. For the past 2 months, their has been a stray Fallow buck on one of the farms i visit, to cull foxes.

The nearest fallow population from this farm is 10 odd miles away.

As he was on his own, i reckon he was kicked out of the main herd at the time of the rut, or just wonderd too far looking for the doe's.

I was asked to shoot this beast, a few times with my .223, but declined, as the mimimum caliber over here is the .22-250.

So, after giving it some thought, i, applied for a deer permit, with my .223 and explained how the .223, would be Ok ( long story  ), to cull this particular buck, as the buck itself was doing extensive damage to hay bales and chasing sheep all over the place, not to mention a show down with a bull.

As my 2 stalking mates were away on safari ( lucky ******* ), i was left to do the dirty deed.

Now, the deer seasons for bucks and does over here, has changed over the last year, so bucks end at the end of december and does at the end of Feb.

But, this particular buck, was doing untold damage, for some reason and had to be taken out, so the farmer nominated me as the stalker and i in turn applied and got a section 42, think thats what its called and got the permit threw last week. :D

It was not an easy stalk, as he was playing hide and seek round a blackthorn bush, but the 55 Grain, sako soft point bullet, put him down

    Pic below.

P.S. The rifle was unloaded and made safe. ;)

    Frank.

Well done Frank I bet after an hour stalking him the ticker was going ten to the dozen, very nice result and worth all the paperwork etc.

What is the scope you have fitted? You mention using .223 on Goats, do you have feral goats in S. Ireland?

    D2D

  13. Have just bought a nice looking sling on ebay it must have been badly listed, not where others were as only a couple of rival bids, brass fittings, tan leather with green webbing supposedly Russian WW2 but with hardly any use, if it feels as good as it looks I shall be well pleased. no chuffed is the word  D2D

  14. I thought that might just get your attention, seriously if you have a Wilkinson store near you they have in stock at the moment tubular telescopic washing line props in green, they are lightweight and made for the job with a black plastic clip on top to take a hide net, costing just £2 each where can we go wrong?

Have noticed them also on Ebay with a scrap of netting and half doz decoys making £50 plus a real rip off so beware. :D D2D.

  15. Paul that 'large black cloud' are rooks not crows and I don't think you'll have much luck getting them interested in a Larsen trap. Best way is to find their roost/nest sites (which shouldn't be too difficult) and NOW is one of the best times of year, before the leaf gets on the trees and whilst they are fighting over the best nest sites, then get out there and blast them. Once they have young in the nests they'll be reluctant to leave them so roost shooting then can also reap (excuse the pun) dividends. Look forward to 4 and twenty in a pie

It used to be a tradition to shoot the young rooks "branchers", at the rookery as they left the nest while hopping about in the branches and before they could fly, this was a week either side of may 21 depending on which part of the country you were in, rook pie in those days was considered a delicacy, usually a .22 or .410 was used and huge bags were made. :D D2D

  16. I tend to slice the rabbit from kinda in between the back legs upwards, then take hold of the front legs in one hand, and the back legs in the other, then quick it a short, sharp swing which normally removes them

If you hold the rabbit as described then "pre tension " by arching its back , it before flicking it away from you its easier as this opens the cavity :D D2D

  17. No they are not his horses.

Do you thinks using a hushpower shotgun would be ok?

If they are not his horses then as Kirky said dont go near them.

He has no right giving you permission to shoot near other peoples horses.

Find the flightlines to the clover, explain the sit, re the horses/cant shoot,to the surrounding landowner, pray for a windy day and your away :P D2D.

  18. At last I have got myself some permission :good:

Its 4 grass fields and the farmer said the pigeons go mad for the clover on it

But.................. he has also got horses on them, he said as long as I don't shoot next to the horses he does not mind. I'm still worried that even if I move away from them they will still spook with a shotgun going off.

Can anybody advise me on what sort of distance I should be from the horses or do you think it might be best to leave it.

    cheers

Having kept horses for a number of years actually in the middle of a commercial shoot, I have seen first hand how they easily become accustomed to shooting provided you dont shoot too close ie 100yds. they soon get used to it after a short while, I would suggest you try shooting a couple of times at a good way off with the wind towards them to judge the reaction and gradually move closer over a week or so.

We had drives next to the paddocks and the horses just moved to other side BUT not all animals are the same so be careful and take it slowly, if you cant shoot on the fields sus out the flightline they are using and get the ******* that way, good luck D2D :P

  20. Got a couple of pigeon breasts from the local farm shop last friday. the best before date is the 24th but looking at them tonight they have gone a darkish colour, where as when i got them they were a redish colour. should they still be ok? not smelt them yet as they are rapped.

As already pointed out meat darkens and IMHO improves with age, as I am always telling my wife dont eat with your eyes :good: , trust your nose but always wash meat before judging it as blood smells quite strongly, provided its been kept at a low temp away from flies (in summer) then it should be ok.

Tip.. if you shoot pigeon in the field and cut off the breast meat wrap them in a few sheets of newspaper not airtight plastic box or clingfilm, as soon as poss wash them, keep chilled until ready to cook then slice and saute with chopped shallots in a little olive oil, add a glass of red wine after 2/3 mins, cook just until a sauce forms but dont overcook... best taste ever. :P D2D
