  1. Most Keepers that I know don't start using Larsen's until the end of March, as it's normally too cold and the call birds will die.

I realise that this Winter has been generally mild, but there's nothing to be gained by trapping too early as the Maggies are not threatening eggs or chicks at the moment.

If you trap them now others will simply move in over the next few weeks to take up the void.

Far better to leave them until territories are established and the Maggies are starting serious nesting and egg laying.

As a matter of interest, I caught 63 in the period early April to late June in my own back garden, and I live in a town centre..!!

I also caught umpteen cats, a robin, two blackbirds and a Dunnock, all of which were released unharmed.

    Cat.

We have bluetits in the boxes already, its that mild.

Last year we had a charlie with his head wedged in the Larsen trying to get at the call bird.

Traps should be out now, it doesnt matter if others come to fill the void, let them keep on coming.........

  2. Hi all, some of us will have Larsen traps operating and I wonder how your doing, We have hade 9 so far this year,

As Magpies are quite high on my list of undesirables I would like to have a running total, if possible, to see if we are making a dent in their numbers. <_< D2D

  3. In simple terms it comes down to allowing yourself a margin or error.

Once that margin is dramatically reduced, you need to get it right, not nearly right.

Most calibres will do the business with a nice broadside shot, presented at 50 yards out - but as we all know real life isn't quite like that <_<

    :good: :o

I find, just because you have a BIG caliber, some folks take shots that are willy nilly and think it will be ok when the deer is hit.

How far from the truth this is, you have to be pricise with all calibers, infact, i will goes as far as to say, the .22 Cf, using correct bullets, will dump all their energy, in the chest of a deer, far more readily, then a BIG centerfire rifle. ???

Folks that dont shoot deer often, panick, when they see one, then start to shake, get buck fever and flinch all over the shop, as they know the big caliber will kick like a mule when fired, result, a poor wounded deer ect. :/

All my experinces with big CF rifles and bullets have been that they pass straight threw the deer, loosing very little energy, a bit like using a FMJ.

    Frank.

Frank can I ask what .22cf type/brand of bullett you would favour for small deer, bearing in mind your very relevant comment regarding energy etc. D2D

  4. As some of u may know, my mum has been fighting breast cancer for two years. and sadly she passed away at 5:30 this morning, she was in no pain what so ever, and has gone to a better place.

She was the best mum i could ever hope for, and i loved her, and always will love her.

and she will be very dearly missed by a lot of people as being an important part of my family.

im just writing to say thank you to all those that have supported me through this time. it was very much appreciated <_<

    yours sincerely

    Thomas Gordon

Very sorry to hear you have lost your mum and at such a young age, try to remember your Dad needs your support and love right now, all the best  D2D

  5. Hi guys i have'nt posted for ages, but still read the post's on the site(still excellent).

Anyway had a visit from the london/essex police for my shotgun renewal, very routine & actually much more friendly & easy than expected. The major problem being after all the inspection's etc he asked for my shotgun licence so he could take it away, as these were the new goverment laws. i hesitantly but firmly said i was not willing to do this because i would need it if i went shooting, & was not prepared to take the chance.

He said he would give me his number & if i got stopped i could get the to ring him, & that it was similar to driving a car you need a license but don't have to carry it with you. i tried not to sound cocky but said i thought this was wrong, in the end he said when i get my new one i can take the photo of the old one & return it by post.

I have never heard of this before has anyone else experienced anything like this?

    regards to all turk101

I READ SOMEWHERE RECENTLY HERE IN KENT THAT THERE ARE PEOPLE POSING AS FIREARMS OFFICERS IT SEEMS IT MAY HAVE SOME TRUTH IN IT!! BE WARNED <_<  D2D

  6. It looks like i'm gonna get a cocker pup soon so a couple of things i need to know.

the dog will be kenneled , but dose it go in the kennel straight away or kept in the house to start. Also what dog food do you guys recommend. Any more tips and advice will be appreciated.

    Cheers The Hitman.

Good idea to feed him/her actually in the kennel or run to start with, its all about association and nice things, dont have the run too far from the house and not out of sight, dogs, especially kennelled alone, can pine if they dont have company or see some activity for long periods.

Use a known puppy level brand then If you intend, as I hope you are, to work your dog go for a high protein mix for a month before the season starts then a maintainence mix for the summer months.

Dont start serious training until about 18 months old, til then its still a child.

I have had many good dogs over the years, some I have trained to Field Trial standards and this has always worked for me. enjoy your new pup.

  8. Well i have had to bite the bullet and shell out a further £280 on the damn thing today :good:

Well i Bodged up the exhaust for now and hope it holds.

Been to a place today who make Cusotm Exhausts and booked it in on the 21st for a WHOLE exhaust.

£280 :/ It only cost £109 for the WHOLE exhaust on the old Cavalier :P I nearly kicked the car in Disgust :/

Still it's a Stainless Steel Exhaust and should NEVER need replaced again so in a way it's an investment. They are ALSO going to raise the exhaust to give me more ground clearance as currently the clearance is only 5" but when they fabricate the new one it SHOULD give me over a FOOT of clearance so thats a bonus!!

Next is the Windscreen as it has a Chip and 2 nasty marks from someone prior to my ownership cleverly using the window wipers with no blades and scouring the window with the metal arms :D

Suzuki SJ windscreen is the same according to the Rickman owners and there is one in the scrappy if i am quick i MAY get it for about £10 to £15

Turning into quite the hobby and i need the Disks off and taken up to the machine shop my Bro in law works in for a free re-surfacing (free) i LOVE that word. Has to be my Favourite. No i aint a Yorkshireman but i am probably a very close second

It won't win any beauty contests just yet but even though it's a bit rough looking it's really a little diamond and needs a polish to look it's best.

I would really love to get my hands on some of the Origional Rickman carpets too as carpet fitting isn't my Forte and it looks a tad shabby :P

Oh and one last thing! A question really! Does anyone know if you can get those BF Goodridge tyres in a 16" rim please?

Would love to get a tad more grip for off road.

    Cheers

    LG

What vehicle are we talking about here? :P D2D

  9. Saw a pic in the mail on sunday of harry in full camo, does anyone know what the camo pattern is called or the type of suit.

It wasnt the usual 95 patt with alot of green in it and had some useful looking features.

If you can help I would appreciate it as mines up for replacement and I fancy some of this. Thanks D2D.

Hi all you may remember my quest to source the camo patt shown in a recent pic of Harry,

Well thanks to a poster I have it, I was directed to British Military Surplus and have just taken delivery of a Para Smock, trousers, shirt and a 2000 patt wet weather jacket with knitted cuffs all for £30 plus £7.50 postage.

I went into a surplus store in Canterbury recently and they wanted that just for the smock!!

The site is well worth a visit and delivery was within 4 days. <_< D2D

  10. What is the exact procedure for freezing pigeon and rabbit?

I tend to eat or give away my meat fresh, because when I freeze it , it comes out looking full of ice crystals and un-pleasing to the eye.

I wash away the blood etc., but try to drain it as dry as possible, have tried it in plastic containers, foil and cling film and am aware not to put it directly in contact with the frost in the freezer.

    What am I doing wrong?

Hi this is how I have always frozen all types of game without problems, it may help, joint, wash then just pat dry with kitchen roll, place on flat tray so not touching each other, leave in freezer box for just long enough to get hard, max 1 hr, then put in proper freezer bags, remove air as H says with a straw, bag should now contain seperate joints individually frozen for ease of use later. shelf life max couple of months.

It does sound as though your meat has freezer burn caused by exposure to air/frost in freezer, I hope this helps as nothing more disheartening than obtaining good meat then not getting it to the table.D2D <_<

  11. Not that many years ago well 6 (but that is around 1/3 of my life) I delivered free newspapers in order to get money and not srounge off my mum for clothes, credit etc. I did not deliver to those with the 'no mail/cold caller.....etc' placquards and closed the gate behind me 90% of the time. In fact the only people's gates I didn't close were the annoying ****** that gave me abuse for providing a free service and attempting to support myself.

So guys, most/some when asked politely will close the gate or not deliver but you have to remember its better they are out working and learning the value of money (as I did) and even in some cases supporting themselves than running round popping tyres, smashing windows, mugging people, etc etc etc.

Well put, there are always two sides to every case and full marks for getting off your backside  D2D

  12. Just wondering if anyone knows a little bit about chicken health matters.

Got two hens in the back garden, had them for about a year now, no problems what so ever. However the last few weeks one of them has been funny and they have both stopped laying. The problem hen, seemed to be having her malt, but she dropped loads and loads and loads of feathers, just the other day. The other hen however has dropped none and is in tip top condition. The problem hen doesnt seem to be gettin any feathers back, the feathers have thinned out mainly at the base of her neck, and just behind her head.

They arnt weezing, gasping etc, and all the droppings are normal. none of the symptoms correspond to lice etc etc, i'm abit puzzled, mum is in the process of getting hold of her vet, but was just wondering if anybody had any experience with chickens and could help me out.

    Cheers fellas

    Ash

Hi Ash have you looked at the lower breast area and between her legs, has she plucked out these feathers? If so she has just gone broody and nothing to worry about health wise, you could sit her on some hard boiled eggs? All the best D2D

  13. I HAVE AN EIGHT MONTH OLD COCKER BITCH WHICH I AM HAVING A LITTLE TROUBLE ON STOPPING ON THE RETREIVE.SHE HAS EXCELENT ABILITY AND IS VERY OBEDIENT,THE ONLY PROBLEM BEING IS STOPPING HER ON THE DUMMY UNTIL I ASK HER TO RETREIVE.SHE QUARTERS EXCELENT AND IS SHOWING ALL THE POTENTIAL TO MAKE AN OUTSTANDING GUNDOG.

I HAVR TRAINED MY LABRADOR WITH THE SAME TECHNIQUE AS I AM USING NOW AND HE HAS TURNED OUT TO BE SECOND TO NONE (very rarely puts a foot wrong).I WAS WONDERING IF ANYONE HAS ANY IDEAS AS TO STOP HER ON THE RETREIVE,ALL ADVICE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

    THANKS

    ROB

Maybe you are starting a tad early? Equate one year dog to seven years human and you have the answer, experienced trainers seldom start serious work until 18 months. Let her enjoy her "childhood" just concentrate on basic obedience, orientation in the world etc. Good Luck  D2D

  14. Never knew there were so many pigeon shooters out there. Newbies joining every day. Teal must be getting rushed off his feet. Perhaps they should be expected to make a maiden speech just like our friends in the House.

BUT does this mean the demise of our Woodpigeon population with so many taking part??? :o

Yes its good to know that there are so many supporters of countrysports, one thing I have noticed, when looking for Kent based shooters, is that alot of newcomers fail to enter their location on the profile.

Its alway nice to swap local info, not always good stuff and can warn of poor service as in the case of Nadden with Greenfields! D2D

  15. LB, whatcha done?

I have been getting receipts for my shooting - client entertainment don't cha know.... and there's VAT to be had back.

Revenue and Customs have recently been showing a great deal of interest in ALL shoots no matter how small, we believe there is dirty work afoot and they will be clawing back payments for unpaid tax.

It will undoubtably mean the end for alot of "organised" shooting. :good: D2D

  16. Hey!,

I'm Quickshot and ive just turned 14. I have just got my shotgun license through and am looking at guns that would suit me.

Im fairly open for Questions if you would like to know anything.

I will try to contribute with what i have already learnt on my journey through the season.

    QS

    :good::good:

Thats more like it, now we know where your from :good: D2D

  17. Really looking for a faulty PSP if anyone has one will pay for it

Also looking for faulty phones will pay as well preferably nokias and sony ericssons but will consider anything

Just post/pm what you got and ill get back to you

Why do you want faulty phones, "is it that you have no friends" does no one want to talk to you? LOL LOL :good: d2d

I may have a couple of nokias, if your serious.

  18. Anshutz would be the best target rifle, CZ is more of a knockabout hunting rifle.

I would de-bate that quite happily Stuart :good: ...........Considering it's factory ammo :good:

    Go on then start debating,

For one how many olympic standard target shooters use CZ? None.

Anschutz are the finest target rifles that mere mortals can get their hands on. There are other handmade target rifles but only at a price.

And everyone uses factory ammo, you can't handload rimfire cases, and once they have been fired they are no good anyway.

All factory ammo will shoot better than any of us.

Not quite true when you say all factory ammo, my Anschutz hates Remington yellow jackets but loves Winchester? :good: D2D

  19. It's never easy...........

BSA's are like Landrovers, both made in the Midlands and tempremental as anything. On song and at full power one minute, flat as a **** the next!

A hammer, some easy start and brute force work best for both companies products. :good:

Next time buy a Weihrauch, mines still at 11.8 after almost a ton of lead up the tube.

Nowt wrong with my Landy or those Ive had in the past, IF you look after them, its the jap **** that cant hack it :good::good: D2D
