John Healey - Minister of Defence announces cuts across the three Services
oowee replied to TIGHTCHOKE's topic in Off Topic
Where did you see this? "These are not the only difficult decisions we will need to make as a new government to deal with the fiscal inheritance," Healey said, adding that the changes would "secure better value for money for taxpayers and better outcomes for our military". The savings will be retained in defence and all personnel will be redeployed or retrained, Healey said. Lets hope we don't leave it to the three services they are incapable of chopping into history. We should bring in some from Ukraine to assist. -
Awesome, that's the sort of thing that stays with you forever. We had a chap last year that shot a warthog heading towards him at speed on a guinea foul drive. That was a sight to see. There are supposed to be no Reds here but as if by magic

Where are we scaling down? Cutting old tat and moving the cash to other areas is exactly what we should be doing. This is a non story if ever i read one:-Lord Lee of Trafford, a defence minister in the 1980s and the Liberal Democrat peer who uncovered the figures, told The Times: ‘We have ended up in a situation where there are 63,000 civil servants employed when the Army itself is only 72,000-strong. The concern is the Army itself is only 72000 strong, barely a months supply on the Russian front line. -

That's unreal. Unfortunately increasingly anything goes in the states. It would probably never happen here, no one would turn up. -
Do you not eat them yourself?

Goodness I hope not it's the Tories that got our public services here in the first place. Everybody wants more but few want to pay for it. All that Starmer is doing is saying it like it is. Fortunately he is confirming the Tory pledge to increase defence spending but unlike the Tories he is looking for the cash. -

I don't see anything about a budget cut rather early retirement to free up funds to use elsewhere. No doubt the push to get our subs fully up and running to reflect the threat from Russia has brought forward retirement plans. -
It's not aimed at farmers. It's aimed at those that buy land purely to avoid IHT. Unfortunately tax is a blunt instrument. The income for farms is mostly pretty desperate currently we are out of the EU and the govt has not replaced the subsidies that may have been applicable. That said farming is a seasonal business the more recent income falls coming (apparently) on the back of exceptional highs for some farms 2022/23. Tax should be fair for all but it should also be equal for all. If farming is a special case then the question needs to be asked why and what we need to do to improve it. We cannot and should not be subsidising business for the sake of nostalgia. Maybe the £5bn that labour are putting into farming will help in the short term but we should not be propping up lame business. There must be somewhere a case for food security but I doubt it's to be found in small family farms. https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/farm-business-income/farm-business-income-by-type-of-farm-in-england-202324

Are forces are not fit for purpose and yet we moan about tax increases and fuel allowance savings. We need to rethink priorities. How we expect to defend ourselves against Russia without increasing taxes is beyond me. When is the next armed forces review? Hopeless. The pay for a Royal Navy rating depends on their rank and experience, and can vary based on their job and location: Basic training: Starts at £16,235, increasing to £20,000 after 26 weeks Able Rating: Starts at £20,000 Leading Rating: Starts at £32,796 Petty Officer: Starts at £37,061 Warrant Officer: Starts at £50,838 Commissioned Officer: Starts at £110,000+ -

I hope we don't rely on that crock of old carp. It would be great if we can get on the new wave of EU spending for replacement armaments (keep it in the family). -
Seems to me this has generated an awful lot of froth amongst Tory farmers, but I have no data for that either. It would be good to hear from accountants as to the ways around this IHT for true farmers. Even the seven year transfer rule is an apparently possible option. Adjacent to one of my farms are three large rewilding areas, the smallest being 70 acres and the largest being 600. No farming takes place. This from Savills about forming a syndicate for purchase.https://www.savills.co.uk/blog/article/217949/rural-property/buying-in-a-syndicate-to-secure-the-rural-dream.aspx

Good for food poisoning. I thought you mostly eat out these days 😁

@ShootingEgg produced a chart from the NFU which you can see above. Unfortunately it has no data as to how many farms will fall within the new thresholds. I cannot see how they could possibly know. I have spoken to a couple of farmers (both dairy) that dismissed it as a non story with a decent accountant.

That would be the best way forward but how you persuade people to accept less I don't know. It's coming with renewable energy but much of it requires a change of social attitudes. I am in the process of selling our house as we struggle to look after it when we are on the boat. It's very efficient but the land is a huge commitment. The new place if we get it is almost passive and has solar generation. It's on the edge of town so we can hopefully leave the car rather than driving everywhere as now. Cars are a challenge. I want a 4x4 for shooting. I have got rid of the Hilux and swapped for a CRV. Putting that red stag in the back last week and then getting off the field was a nightmare 🤣
