  1. will do

the less she does the better she seems , except for being in her cage overnight then shes stiff .

shes ok until she moves in a certain way then sets it off , i just hope to god its not her hips or a fracture

i know i should take her to the vet , but i,m dreading the bill to be really honest :hmm: , i know they,ll say rest first anyway so i,m doing that stage now.

    cheers

ps. just wondering is there hip displacement in spaniels

  2. do pups get growing pains

my 9 month old springer bitch as suddenly started limping on her back right leg .

she runs round like a mad un  and use,s it to scratch etc .

i,ve had a feel theres no heat or reaction to me gently massageing it , i,ve basically rested her a couple of days but shes still the same .

the most obvious is when shes eating ie . she leans to one side and thus raises the leg off the ground slightly , also in the morning she limps out of her gage , but after a minute shes got it down ( as in stiffing up with rest ).

shes a chunky bitch , heavy boned but not fat.

does this sound likew a break , tendon injury or even growing pains ( according to one web site ) :hmm:

    thanks

  3. my girls season as just started today , we are in our 4th weekend of beating this sat and really enjoying it , but it looks like i,ll have to go it alone :good:

    OR

is there anyway i can postpone it or disguise it , or even just take a risk for this weekend and lay her off for the next 3 weeks

what would you do ?? ???

  4. doing the same thing , my ESS just under 2yrs , i,m letting her walk up the edges on the way to the drive etc to flush , but as soon as the proper drive starts shes back on the lead , which is a night mare in tall maize :good: but needs must.

i keep my eye on the keeper and wait for the very last bit of the drive ( after the final big flush  ) before unleasing her ( is this not a good idea ?? :P ) and tell her to hunt on so theres no chance of her spoiling the drive but she gets to work just a little bit at the end . maybe thats right or maybe wrong -- comments welcome.. :drinks:

  5. to get my dogs to watch me i was told to pop the treat ( cheap chopped up hot dog sauasage from morrisons ) between my teeth , when close up say "watch me" and spit the treat to the dog , hopefully into its open mouth.. the idea is the dog as to catch the treat in its mouth there fore its a more intense and concentrated look .

carry on until eventually the dog will look back at you straight in the eye with out the need for a treat . takes about a week to grasp ..

i have done this with the last 3 dogs and find it works , to help get there attention while close , but also good to get the dog to look back at distance before sending for a retreive or re-directing onto a dummy etc.

  6. thanks lads - bungie cord idea sounds good , guessing it would work with 2 people better

i will also tighten up my sit to shot routine , although when a shot is fired it does take her attention away from the flush itself

i,ve thrown the dummy and blown stop whistle but always when shes out hunting , so i can get between her and the dummy , but i will try it close up :good: . shes mad for tennis balls ( too mad ) so that will be a big temptation for her and right at her feet ;)

any more ideas or varients welcomed

    cheers

  7. lads i need some ideas tips or tricks on how to set up a simulated flush ie bird or rabbit ( cold game ) to practice my stop to flush exercise

at the mo i cant afford a visit to a rabbit pen or trainer :good: , my bitch ess is coming along ok , its just this vital last bit of the real thing .

one to one rough shooting (not masses of birds or other dogs) shes ok . i,m wanting use her for beating but shes not 100 % to flush as yet in a beating situation , she's 2yr next week and needs the experience now

shes well trained  , but as a gun dog ( ie the DVDs ) not so much as a beating dog :P ie to walk up game cover etc along with 1/2 doz other dogs all darting about the excitemant is sometimes too much

so i want to try and simulate some single flushes for her and hopefully get her to sit to flush :good:

  8. which wormer and flea combo do you recommend

i normally get a wormer from the vet , but wondering if i can get something as good from the pet store now i,ve got 3 to do

they also need to be de-flea'd as theres been a couple of hedge hogs in the garden this week and the dogs are scratching like mad

    cheers

  9. Changing your whistle, as said, will make no difference to the dog's behaviour. However, a pitch different from mainstream whistles can be helpful on a shoot day when everyone sounds the same.

We have one guy on the shoot who uses the 210 with a pea, it's the only one on the shoot. His dog doesn't listen to it either but at least we know which dog to look out for! :good:

thats what i was wondering ,if i,m standing with 1/2 doz other beaters all dressed similar all useing the same whistle she gets confused -- today for example out beating i saw my dog latch onto someone elses whistle after a drive , she turned round like she should to look for me couldnt see me because i was just behind 2 guys in front then carried on , i was just about to pip her myself anyway , so i stepped out into the field so she could see me

  10. which whistle do you use and why ??

being thinking about changing whistle as i,m getting sick of this sudden selective hearing :hmm: i,m getting from my ess.

i currently use the 210.5 for my springer , is there a better option ie 211 , 212 , etc or silent whistle .

is there any proof that the 210.5 suits the springer spaniel better than other types.

also is there any excuse for a dog not hearing a whistle ie. certain types or distance ( what sort of range ).

    thanks

  11. Its an in season thing happens throughout the animal world horses cows and dogs etc when in season the other females do try and mount them.

thanks lads -- i had seen it in cows and horses as i,ve worked with both , but never come across it in bitches , ive always spayed them in the past after there 2nd season , but they were pets not workers
