sounds a great idea for steady-ing up a dog
think i might get a few , how big a garden does one need to keep a few chickens ?
-
thanks guys very interesting
wildfowling looks like a very good way and very reasonably priced way to get a few days shooting.
because of traveling time , i think i would only go a half a doz times per season , but i would also like the oppertunity to travel up to scotland on occasion ,
so living where i do whats my best option / club to join ?
-
Whole as in guts in ?
yes mate whole birds
-
spalding wildfowlers=80,south lincs=120ish,north lincs 90,humber 120,it includes basc membership.craig
thats not too bad , which ones includes the BASC insurance , currently NGO , but renewal coming up .
nearest cost to me is the wash , boston , then cleethorps
-
always check out te BASC website they also provide an excellant booklet called wildfowling permits which list clubs that will allow day ticket flights
do you have to be a member of a club to get a day permit/ticket
-
how long can whole game birds be kept frozen for , i,ve still got half a frezzer full of pheasant
wondering if i could make a pie or are they past it.
shot and frozen on same day end of last season
-
just wondering how much it may cost to join a wildfowling club , trouble is i live in land locked nottinghamshire.
i dont mind traveling for a good days outing and of course there are inland waters. no idea of prices etc .
anyone suggest anywhere that may be accesible and affordable
thanks

cheers kron -- i didnt know if he was still in buisness , does he have a rabbit pen , any idea what the cost per hour is .
whats the loacation postcode
thanks
-
need to find a rabbit pen i think in the notts belvoir A52 / A46 area - if anyone knows of any please let me know
hunting into the wind , i forget this simple advice every time must get it tattooed somewhere
going to take her out in the morning and use the long lead or try a retractable , see if i can get her closer on the turn and if anything flushes give a tug and stop whistle blast :look: does that sound ok?
thing is shes knows what to do , i,m just going over old ground , the little bu**er
-
so , so sorry mate i know what its like to loose a young dog well before his time , so sad
please let us know what the vets verdict is
keep your chin up , if you can
-
just run this by me again
out this morning dogging in as you do 2 pips turn , long pip stop , pip , pip , pip recall.
was all ok till a few pheasants flushed , but then they refused to run/fly so my dog breaks and i loose her for 100 yards .
by then the birds have gone and she comes back to my pip pip pip rolls on her back pi** her pants and says sorry .
in training with everything from dummies to cold / warm game shes great.
so what do i do , i realise this is a stop whistle versus excitement issue
do you think this will get better with the more dogging in we do or worse.
i dont wont to give up , so wondering if walking on a lead or line might be a good approach ( with out the hunting up ) and also whats the best way to teach stop to flush
thanks

yup probably could have done but it would have needed to be the extra skinny type and would have needed boards to get it in, we got this one in down a number of steps and through two doorways through the house. Not simple but if I'd have had a weeks digging to do i'd have found a way!! That said digger plus a grab lorry round us for a weekend would have been £400 plus vat or there abouts and you'd have still had to barrow it out. What you really needed was a couple of polish blokes for a couple of days
wow -- whats the diamensions of that digger , how small can you get them , just wonder if i could get one down the side of my house
-
cheers guys -- looking forward to giving it a try
its not all the time just occasional , is there any reason to visit the vet ie . problems
-
my springer bitch keeps letting off some kind of really strong fishy smell , done it half a dozen times now .
what the heck is it
is this a scent gland smell or anal or vulva , all looks ok nothing swollen or leaking
-
Just measured the springer and purchased one from Kev at Tidepool, that should keep her warm this season.
Its dual zip and velcro so should hold well plus extra chect protection
do you have a link for tidepool mate
cheers
-
Wouldn't worry too much about it.
Would look at training it to sit to flush rather than just sit to whistle though.
yep thats what i would like :look:
explain the best way to do this BB
cheers

which springer darren?
was it the younger of the 2?
no mate the older one ( 22 months ) , the one i,ve been drilling every day with the damn stop whistle .
i had been using the blow the whistle to stop her , then through the dummy out , if shes stopped on my command she gets the retrieve , but if shes slow on the stop i place her back to the stop point and i pick it my self ( similar as you suggested ) routine.
great at close-ish quarters and she had started to get the message at abit further out say 40/50 yards , she actually stops and looks at me for redirection ( or did )
like i said in one of my other posts she had seemed to have gone up a gear , bit hyper , but then again there as been a lot of scent on the ground.
if only i had an e-collar on her at that vital moment
the younger one ( 8 months ) i,ve eased up on mate , i,m finding the less i do with her the better especially the retrieving bit just going stick with it until hopefully her instincts kick in a bit more .
-
went out to do some dogging in this morning , took my little *** of a springer with me , hoping to drive the stop whistle message home ( good oppertunity i thought ) .
All went really well flushed plenty back stop whistle working as good as it used too .
just finnishing up after a 1 hour 20 min walk heading back to the car and walked up an edge where i did,nt expect to see a single bird and WHAM my bitch flushes 3 sets of birds in quick consession , i,d put my whistle away and she was having a bit of a free run.
Anyway it was too much for her and she took off after them ran into the cover , i,m whistleing and shouting like mad flushes 3 more birds , by now i,m running up hill after here and shes on her way back to me , boy did i feel like throttling her .
totally ruined my day and felt like crying
next time i,m on that stretch i will be ready
-
mine as the same problem mate , 3 seasons and 3 phantoms all about 5 or 6 weeks after her season as finnished .
i,m going to try the CSJ rasberry supplement , its on there website

not chaged foods just new bags of the same stuff:-
skinners maintenance and raw tripe ( pet shop freeze dried ) twice a day
and couple of ( pet shop ) hide chews a day
i notice in the skinners feed the 1st main ingriedient is wheat/cereal and the protein content is 19% , basically a cheap food at £15 per 15kg sack.
it seems to suit the digestion ok though
it seems like she as gone up a gear , but also gone off a gear as well like shes lost the plot sometimes.
if she was any where near a season i,d blame that .
-
do you think that what we feed our dogs can effect its behaviour
anyone ever found this or is there any proof that certain feeds or foods can change the way our dogs behave.
any particular foods etc or brands
thanks
-
i fancy making some sandwhich chutney but whats available in natures larder that i could use or is it the wrong time of year although it feels like autumn
and is there a fool proof method ie dummy proof
-
lads -- just re-read my own post and your right she is young and i have been trying to train the 2 dogs along side of each other ( seperately of course ) being short on time maybe i,ve jumped the gun . this morning she retrieved a rubber water dummy to hand 3 times in a row , very strange , like a fool i throughs it out again and she just ignores it , i should of stopped while the going was good
one more question :- because shes not too keen --- do you think shes too young to be shown or associate scent with what it actually comes from , ie. if she accidently flushes say
a rabbit would it be better to let her give chase after the scent at this stage ( to try and build up enthusiasium ) or get out there and stop her.

na rather have something useful i,m afraid gimme my old trooper any day
Bitch in season
in Dogs and Dog Training
Posted
my 8 month old pup as just started her season .
as anyone who owns bitchs ever known one coming into season effecting the other bitch ie behaviour or even starting them off in season ( even though there not due )
my older bitch of 23 months is being a *** again , i,ve caught her trying to mount the pup several times
just wondering
