  1. One when you first came into Cobholm between the Railway pub and the Two Bears pub , that one was called Begarnio's this was one of the cheapest ones where you could get fish and chips for a shilling , 8d for the fish and 4d for the chips , they were alright but a bit greasy . Then you had Brewer's near to where I lived at Dolman Square , these were the best ones , another one that opened was near the entrance to where you used to live at Tyrolean sq , this one was near the juniors school , the fourth one was at the middle of Century Road near the Salisbury Arms pub , the last two were only going for a year or two as the first two were well established and were trading for years, in fact where Brewers was it is still a fish and chip shop to this day . Also , including the two pubs coming into Cobholm we had at one six pubs that could all make a living , now there are just two . sign of the times Simon .
  2. Haven't heard a Cuckoo or seen a Swallow yet , way to cold at the moment along the East coast , but as a compensate I do hear the booming of a Bittern , my hearing is not that good but I can hear it from a fair distance , and as a bonus , every so often I see it on the wing , never seen a young one or two flying together . MM
  3. At one time we had four all going at the same time in Cobholm , my mum had six kids and although we had next to nothing as far as money was concerned we used to have fish and chips on virtually every Friday night , the best one ( Brewers ) were 4d for the chips and 9d for the fish so we could get fish and chips for 8 people for less than a quid , although that pound note was a lot a money at the time , now it is small change in your pocket . MM
  4. On my door step but don't need anymore at the moment , Good buy for someone and GOOD LUCK with the sale
  5. Very interesting , maybe some of our Welsh members could be a bit help with the location you might one day be visiting . You would have to go up and down the U K two or three times to do 5000 plus miles on a road trip , a friend of mine is now taking three months off work to walk with his wife the full length of the U K from Lands End to John O Groats ,the route they are taking add up to 1,115 miles and they will be walking on average 15 / 20 miles a day . MM
  6. No the coalman worked for Bessey and Palmer , he had an ole Hillman Huskey and it ran on B P petrol , think about it , I told you we were a rough ole lot over on the island
  7. Another thing that not many are aware of is our shrinking coast line , here on the Norfolk coast there isn't a year go by where another dwelling is lost to the sea , a few miles up the coast at Hembsy it is a constant nightmare for the home owners , one ex army bloke have moved his house on rollers twice over the last few years and now he is left with nowhere to go when the next storm take away his garden which it will and it is only a matter of time . One good little earner for a local farmer was to have a car boot on his land although last year was the last year after 29 years , on a hot day in the Summer months it is not unusual to see maybe 3 / 4 hundred stalls set up at a minimum of of £8 , £9 if you have got a trailer and a tenner if you have a large van , You take a normal dry Sunday in the Summer with say 200 stalls at a minimum of £8 each that is £1600 for a good mornings work , gates are open at 6am and the site is empty by 1pm , very few crops on earth could make that sort of money in a few hours .
  8. We also had an insurance chap come to ours , he was on a loser as we had very little to insure and my mother had no money to pay him anyway so it was often a wasted journey , but you know what insurance companies are like , they will just not give up trying to get something out of you ,
  9. When you get to a age where you can look back in life it just goes to show how much the world have changed in a very short time , one thing that do stick out which have been a big part of my life is farming and the gear to run a farm , years ago I thought they can't advance a lot more than how the machinery was then , how wrong was I . MM
  10. That was a very good start to what lies ahead in your married life , well done you and your good lady , we done nearly three weeks on the Greyhound couches , fantastic scenery along the West coast but found the traveling a bit tiring and I wasn't even driving
  11. You are both right , it is just not new builds that are having an impact on our various sports it can be a number or reasons . On our place the boss have used a 1000 acers of the estate as a re wilding project , another farm I went on now do one of these large Maize ( Mazes ) and take the children on farm tours , so with so much public activity the shooting side have come to a close. Then another farm have signed a contract for 20 years on a 100 acers solar panel field and Sheep are now feeding below the panels . The list just go on and on with fishing ponds , caravan parks , glamping and even a 4 x 4 course which is well attended .
  12. As the volume of building land shrink then the price of land is just going to go one way and that is not down , with the climate change making farming a stressful occupation you cannot blame the farmer if overnight he can become a very wealthy bloke for signing some paper work .
  13. This is happening up and down the country , touch wood our marshland is more or less left alone and so is most of the estate I go on but around the outskirts new houses are going up non stop , we will never gain and new land today and tomorrow there will be even less . I feel sorry for the person who have only got the odd farm that is surrounded by new houses that are getting for ever more closer to his perm . MM
  14. Only well off people went to Swaffham , and we were not one of those . What was a lot better in those far off days was when you could go to your nearest dentist and get looked at the same day if you went before 9am , I saw in the E D P last week where they said there are 6000 on the waiting list at a dentist in Kings Lynn yes 6000 , it is just as bad if not worse in Yarmouth , some things were a lot better in the pre boat people era ( good ole days )
  15. One thing no one had mentioned was when you could go to your village shop and stick anything you bought in the book and then paid for it when you got the family allowance or when your dad got paid . Our village shop let us have a bottle of Corona for 9d and never got anything on the empty bottle when you took it back . Our local fish and chip owner would fry any large fish we got off the trawlers and only charge us for the chips we bought. Ditchie would most likely know this went on at the Christmas poultry sale at the sale ground at Acle. The men and women would go to the sale ground to buy the Christmas dinner , some of the poultry were oven ready but plenty were still alive , if someone bought a live Turkey they would ask this bloke if he could kill it , he had a short length of a stout broom stick and he would hold the Turkey up by its feet so the Turkey had a kink in it's neck , he would lower it down so it's neck touched the ground and then he would put the broom stick across it's neck and stand on each end , he would then give the Turkey a quick jerk upwards and the bird was as dead as a dodo , the woman would open her purse and give him two bob or half a crown and off she would go with with this freshly killed Christmas dinner , what would happen if this went on this day and age
  16. Your f i l must have had a very good back to lug those bags of coal about until he was 73 , our ole coalman used to wear a heavy sleeveless jacket and the sacks of coal were on a flat back lorry that were the same height as he was so he balanced them on his back and way he went , he used to charge 10 bob a sack all the year round , normally it was cheaper in the Summer when there was less demand for coal , also in the Summer the coal company used the lorries for carting Peas , these were still in the pods and loaded up on the lorry to be carted off to Birds Eye to be shelled , now everything is done on the field , except the freezing bit , but that is sure to come before to long . MM
  17. You sounded if you lived next door to me in the mid 50s , although we never had a horse drawn milk cart but we did have an old four wheel barrow that the milkman pushed around the streets in all weather , yes we had the coalman bring us a cwt of coal on his back down our narrow passage , the dustbin men with the galvanised bath on there heads ,the chap on his bike to sharpen your shears , the chimney sweep who had a trailer on the back of his bike , he would sweep your chimney and it took a week to clear the soot up . You are the only one who seemed to remember the old penny gas meter that you put a penny in the slot on the top and wound the lever round until the penny dropped to the bottom of the meter , what about the ole linen mangles with the big wooden rollers ? Also at the end of our road we had an emergency phone box with a Blue light on the top , now that is going back a bit
  18. Mr T Burton ?? , he also ate my Digestive with his cup of tea 😋
  19. That would be amazing and hopefully we would be able share your trip as well with your look forward to write up's and photos to match Have you ever been to the U K ? MM
  20. Now that is quick , you didn't have some folded notes in your hand when you gave them a hand shake did you ? , or did you drop them off a brace of Pheasants off for there Christmas party
  21. Unless things have changed over the last three years since I have renewed my s g c but I found that the Norfolk branch of the police who issued out the new s g c were first class , kept you informed and my new one came through the letter box just before my old one ran out . Last week I handed in a B S A s x s to the local police station and again no problem , no charge and they gave me a receipt to prove I have handed it in and no longer have it . Certainly haven't any complaints now or in the past . MM
  22. A road trip that now I could only dream about , we thought our county was flat but on some of the photos the sheer distance were just amazing . I have been to Arizona when me and my wife toured the West coast of America and looking back although it was tiring at times with the distance we travelled it was still the best holiday by miles we have ever had , fantastic country . Brilliant set of photos by the way and a very enjoyable post . THANKS for sharing
