  1. Hi all, hoping to do some beating for the first time this season and drag my boy out (and hopefully part him with a screen!) Just wondered if anyone has any decent clothing to get him kitted out? I've bought waterproof trousers before but he managed to catch them on barbed wire on their first outing, so looking for slightly tougher stuff. The trousers I spotted in Decathlon have gone out of stock. I'm not keen to be spending £30-50 on a pair of trousers that he'll grow out of in months!
  2. Hi all, does anyone know if the next shoot at Almshoebury is on the 1st (first Sunday of the month) or on the 2nd? I'm sure someone mentioned it was the 2nd, but I've not caught up with them to confirm.
  3. To follow up on Buze's original comment, it would only take a quick copy and paste into each of these new posts with the correct information to make the invitation seem much more welcoming. As Sian found, trying to go out on her own to find the accurate directions etc. isn't easy. Also, if the correct information is here on the posts that are repeated, then there's more chance of googling to find the right details. Might increase turnout
  4. Hi all, My lovely lady and I are starting to look more seriously about getting our cocker pup. One thing I hadn't maybe considered was timing with regards to litters. Someone mentioned that most good working dogs will be working through the season, and as such maybe wouldn't be having litters. Also someone else mentioned that a lot of people prefer to have pups for the summer to make life easier for toilet/basic training etc. given the longer daylight hours. Does anyone have any views or advice regarding this at all? Also, if anyone has any suggestions of recommended or reputable breeders, we'd welcome them, we're based in North Herts. Dog would be predominantly a pet, but I'm looking to train them even though I don't shoot as much as I'd like.
  5. One thing I found when taking my Lanber Sporting Deluxe out for the first time when still very new, was that my mount wasn't solid enough to allow the inertia block trigger mechanism to kick over correctly. I'd fire the first shot, and then nothing for the second. Once I was mounting correctly all was fine.
  6. Hi all, looking for a few Saturdays beating over the coming season. Newbie beater if someone wouldn't mind that, but looking to get outside and enjoy a decent day's craic with likeminded people, and meet some more people in the community. I'm not looking for shooting at the end of it, but the experience enough would be great. Unfortunately arrangements with my son and life in general wouldn't mean it couldn't be every Saturday, however if there's an opportunity here and there I'd like to give it a go. Live in Stotfold, so areas around there would be great, although most of Herts/some of Beds is doable.
  7. Full disclosure, this is my cousin's place down in East Sussex, but even I think it's quite lovely. I've not glamped down there (only in our tent in the fields with my son a few times) but it seems to get great reviews. They've Safari tents, Bell tents, and the cabin in the woods that featured on George Clarke's Amazing Spaces. (the one that he 'built' even though the Will Hardie basically designed it and his guys built it) http://dernwoodfarm.co.uk/ Also just been recently awarded a Certificate of Excellence from TripAdvisor. Not too far from Brighton or Lewes if you wanted to drive back that way too.
  8. Where was the shoot in Bedfordshire? Contemplating one of the simulated days at AGL, only £200. Wonder if there's many others about. The good lady saw the article in the BASC magazine about sim days at Highclere that she quite fancies.
  9. Great to meet you too Michel. Thanks for being so friendly and taking me round a new ground. Quite easy to rattle through the cartridges in the Cow Shed! I'd never shot anything really regimented before, normally I just rock up and and shoot whatever I fancy, so it was a nice, different experience. Glad your lady had a good time, and shot well at Stand 4. That overhead from behind tower was tricky from a few of the stands. Thanks everyone for the tips. Like Michel and I were discussing, it's very refreshing to find a hobby/sport where everyone is absolutely friendly, encouraging and welcoming.
  10. And to show a bit of contrast, my lovely lady had put in her application about 3 and bits months ago, had a call on Monday to arrange her visit, a 20 min chat on Thursday afternoon, and picked up her licence Friday lunchtime. Herts/Beds.
  11. Sounds good. My lady is looking forward to her Bun club outing, and I'll have about 4 hours to kill. Thanks for all the comments, and I'll keep an eye out for you two Buze, I'm the dark haired guy with stubble and glasses. Have a good day's shooting everyone, Paul
  12. Ah, thanks for the tip about the non-licenced shooter. I'll try and put him off from coming along. Do I still need a safety check myself before I can shoot too then? Do they prefer people to book in ahead for it or is it a quick check to make sure you're safe? Thanks again for the heads up, and anywhere that serves cake is fine by me.
  13. Hi all, My better half is going along to the West London Shooting School on Saturday for the Ladies Shooting Day. After speaking to Terry Bakerboy who's been coaching her, he suggested that I try AC Sporting Targets just next door to kill some time while I wait for her. I may be on my own, or possibly taking friend of a friend round with me, but just wondered if anyone else is out there and wanted to catch up possibly? I've not shot there before so looking forward to checking out a new ground.

  15. Does it make me sad that I watched the bit where he was firing from the passenger seat and wondered where his eye protection was? I don't know how much of those clays are left once they explode?

    Plumbers!

Thanks all, ever so much for all this information. Never expected everyone to volunteer and take time to post it, so thanks. Given what I've been told, I've spotted this: Looks like the sealant on the outside isn't great in that corner, and from the dark stain where the tray surround normally is, looks like it runs down the back edge of that against the wall and collects on the floor. Wonder if it's simply that, and the capillary action is taking it up the wall and causing it to swell slightly, giving the cracking of the grout on the exterior of the enclosure.

    Plumbers!

Thanks Chaps. I've had another dig around and I think the sealant around one side of the exterior of the shower isn't great. Feels almost crunchy if I run a finger along it. I tried putting the hose just on that corner and there was water coming all the way down the back edge of the tray. Still waiting for the insurance emergency plumber to turn up, hopefully I can get his opinion on this. I'm hoping it's not the tiling and go out as I'd guess it's all been done within the last 10 years given my knowledge of the property. As you say though, who knows what is behind the tiles. I'd like to think whoever did it, did it properly the first time around though.

    Plumbers!

The discoloured/disjointed grout is on the outside of the cubicle, and about 3 feet off the ground. It's pulled away on that joint most of the way up the wall. The step out is where the pipework is hidden behind. I've just had one plumber poke his head round and he thinks the rest if the grout in the shower area might be naff and leaking through generally. Said the sealant looks in good nick all the way around. Could mean having to have the shower enclosure out, tiles and plasterboard off, new ply, and then get it all refitted and retiled. Annoying, as I wasn't really keen on refitting that corner of my bathroom, especially having just had to pay out a significant amount to the Ex as part of the divorce for this house. Oh well, life happens :-) I'll wait and get some quotes to do the work, as it's a bit beyond me I think. In the meantime I'm off to buy a shower curtain to string up to use the hose over the bath. If anyone does want any work up round this way and wants to quote, drop me a line. Would rather it went to someone in the community.

    Plumbers!

Doesn't seem to be, and seems to be something going on higher up the side of the shower unit, judging by the way the grout has discoloured and pulled away. I'll let the emergency plumber take a look when they turn up, and go from there. I'll still need to put it right, just rather not have to go through the insurance for the rest of it.I'd rather pay upfront now than have a claim against my record. Just more miffed that there seems to be so much work around these guys don't need to follow up new leads at all. Nice position to be in!

    Plumbers!

I did try that on Sunday, so they could get their Dynorod/British Gas guys back out again. Never had the call back from them within the four hours so left it, and rang yesterday and even the Insurance people couldn't get through to them. The emergency plumbers are coming as part of a £500 limit I seem to have that doesn't actually register against my insurance. However it won't cover any of the putting right afterwards. I'm keen not to replace my whole shower unit, but I'm aware it may have to come out temporarily while someone figures out what's wrong. I'd still need someone to come in afterwards and make good of the mess, so I was hoping to have one person do it all.

    Plumbers!

So after the stress of one leak that required me taking part of my hallway to bits and the Insurance Company sending out an emergency plumber to fix that, I've found my shower is leaking somewhere through to the ceiling below! Only seems to be when I'm using the shower, so I've had a bath the last couple of nights. Trouble is, I can't find a plumber locally who wants to come out and take a look. I'm not in a great rush, as I can keep the water on with this leak, but I'd still like it looked at as it's a bit of a PITA. Three plumbers I've tried, all who say they're too busy. One was worried it might be a bigger job when I said the pipework is behind the tiles, and didn't want to get involved (and I've only been trying to pick the ones that say they do bathroom installs, so the tiling shouldn't be an issue for them) The others didn't even want me to leave my details to follow up with, which irked me a bit. I'd happily wait a week for it to be looked at. I wish I could be in a profession where I could turn down work like this! I can't give my money away...
  22. I'd used something similar to the Peltors with my son before, but they are very tight on his head, and consequently he wasn't keen to wear them. I eventually bought him a pair the same as mine, http://www.amazon.co.uk/Howard-Leight-Honeywell-1013530-Electronic/dp/B001T7QJ9O/ref=sr_1_1?s=diy&ie=UTF8&qid=1440962509&sr=1-1&keywords=Howard+Leight+by+Honeywell+1013530+Impact+Sport+Electronic+Folding+Earmuff He likes to pretend he's got super-sonic hearing when they're turned up, and they're much more comfortable on him. Here's him helping my mate out
  23. I had this exact issue on my first ever outing with my Lanber Sporter. I think my mount was poor out of the shoulder and I was using 21g Hull Comp X which are very soft anyway. Once I started mounting it properly it was fine.
  24. Potentially a stupid question here, so please forgive me... What should you do if you a live/unfired cartridge that you need to dispose of? It's not come up in safety discussions when I've had lessons, but something that occurred to me the other day. Not sure what circumstances it might arise from, maybe one that's gone in the mud, or looks a suspect shape, or casing/crimp coming apart maybe?
  25. This one.http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B005FEGYCO/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1418286595&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX110_SY165 I bought after my Led Lenser got stolen along with the car. Cheap enough so you won't stress if you lose/drop/break it, runs off 3 AAA's, and plenty bright enough. I've one for the car and one in the house.
