If you've never used a ball-tipped knife i'd seriously recommend you try one,for gralloching & opening up the legs etc they're unbeatable,they do the job in seconds,i use a Gerber but there's one or two other brands out there,Mora & F. D*ck for example.

To polish the piston put it in a pillar drill & go at it with varying grades of wet or dry then finish it of with solvol autosol & a cloth,works a treat.

I was in an angling club for years,mainly sea angling,i left last year for the same reason,getting too expensive,anything from 15-20 plus trips per year at an average of £100 per trip all-in soon adds up!,why are you looking at a 30-80 class rod,are you planning targeting skate?,a 20-30 class is plenty for the usual species in the waters around here,even moreso if using braid,much more sensitivity,i'd also be very wary about using braid on a roller eyed rod,even though it may be designed for braid,i've seen it causing problems,the club i was in had a good few very experienced & competitive anglers & not one of them would even consider using roller eyed rods.

Yes Jay_Russell,i was a bit miffed,i'd researched the Maxus & was keen to own one,it wasn't a sales tactic to try & sell me something else,i'm well known in the shop & i left with the £1k still in my pocket!,they stock plenty other Brownings,O/U's & S/S's but not a Maxus to be seen,they would have ordered one in for me but after hearing about the grief i walked away,more in-depth research afterwards told me that there was indeed a lot of cycling problems with the guns & like i'd been told it wasn't to do with loads or shell sizes,just poor cycling,whether this is/was to do with a bad batch or teething problems with early models i don't know,like i said,the Xtrema 2 has never given me any grief so i'll be keeping it.

My local gunshop now refuses to stock any Browning Maxus due to the volume of trouble they've had with them,out of the dozen plus they've previously sold nearly every one of them was returned with cycling problems,i was on the verge of buying one myself until they advised against it,i'll stick with my Beretta AL391 Xtrema 2,can't fault it!

Best get yourself a set of brass pin punches,less chance of marking/damaging the pins,plenty cheap sets available on fleabay...
