  1. what have you got on ur certificate? if ur concidering semi must be .22lr? iv got a ruger 10/22, good fun but hardly use it since i got a .17hmr. if its not to late i would go for a 17hmr. if its .22 then there are plenty of good s/h rifles on the market, just go and have a look and see what feels right!
  2. Im sure i read somewhere that BASC where trying to ban non-yellow 20g, a good thing!
  3. Iv just got a variation for a .243 for munty's and fox (and the odd larger deer). I was in exactly your position, had 12 months experience with a .17hmr, wanted to shoot fox and muntys, applied for a .223, and then went out shooting with an experienced team of beaters and all said change to the .243 so rang the FLO and changed it. .17HMR should be plently long enough for vermin. .243 is good for everything else. my uncle was my mentor and wrote me a letter straight away as iv been slaking with him for 6 years now.
  4. cheers. thats what i wanted to know. how long would you hang a munty for? bone saws seem to be quite expensive...will i be able to make do with a cheap one for now or do i really need to spend money on it?
  5. Im about to start stalking muntjac unaccompanied and need to get the essentials to allow me to prepare the carcasse for the table. In time i will build on the equipment but at the moment i just want the essentials, as cheap as possible. Can anyone reccomend equipment. (knife, bone saw, fly net, that sort of thing). hoist? what are the must haves? Thanks
  6. i used to use air rifles, now i have a ruger .22lr (hardly use it) and a CZ .17hmr. there both dovetail and i just have mounts. dont realy understand the bases. do the bases have to be made for a remington 700? and do i need bases and rings from the same make or do they all fit each other? had a look on a few websites and some bases say which make rifle they are for and some dont say! been stalking for a while (accompanied) but never realy taken note of the mounts. cheers for the help
  7. I have a Leupold VX-II and got a remington 700 SPS in .243 on hold for when I get back from uni. Its my first centrefire. Its for fox, muntjac, and roe (and the odd larger deer). Can anyone recommend a good set of mounts? I think its a 1 inch tube. ones that will do the job without being too expensive. Any Ideas? Thanks
  8. Muntjac are not vermin! they also do little damage to crops. "although there is any number of market gardeners who will argue the point, agricultural damage is not a huge problem...very frequently muntjac seen feeding in crops are actually selecting out other plants that grow among them". The damage is to bluebells/ground fauna, and thinning out woodland to the extent that Roe deer, ground nesting birds, small mammals, and invertabrates find there habitat disapearing. Just happen to be reading 'Muntjac' by Charles Smith-Jones. His words not mine! Good luck though...
  9. I would go into a shop and just find one that feels right
  10. If in time you find that one rifle is not getting any use, thats the time to sell...not now!
  11. Even an ASE Utra mod wont silence high velocity rounds...(i dont think?). I would keep the .17HMR, i think its a much better rifle than a .22lr even though its louder. longer range and head shots. I cant see how the adition of a .223 will affect the use of the hmr unless it was foxes that you where using it for. thats just my opinion, you have both rifles so only you know which you prefer. Also .223 wont do for roe south of the border!
  12. in theory its possible, in practice its a joke...i hope it is a joke! in terms of hold over...aim at the moon and hope for the best! NO CHANCE!
  13. dont rule out your land for a centrefire. i was surprised when my land was passed for an HMR a few years ago and i have recently had it passed for a .243. bout 100-150 acres of shallow valley in suffolk. foot path going straight through the middle. firearms officer said footpaths dont bother him because when there is no one on them they dont make a difference! sounds like hes better than most!
  14. snowing in durham...has been for a wile but not setteling as the ground is wet!
  15. i can guarantee thats wrong...i for one have not.
  16. I would not shoot a pheasant with an airgun but if its serving a purpose as you say? then fair enough. however, i would be interested in an explination as to how pigeon decoying and fox calling can be classed as unsporting, while shooting pheasants with an airgun is sporting.
  17. Im about to get a .243 , mainly for muntjac and roe but i wont think twice about taking it up to scotland for red, or shooting foxes with it. All the rifle shooting i have done has been with a .243 and although im definatly no expert, the quarry has ranged from foxes to red stags. I find this post interesting because i am also trying to decide between a tikka T3 and a Remmy SPS.
  18. Iv never heard of someone being asked to clear up pheasants with an airgun! what made them deserve that?
  19. They all sound like good offers, which one would you recomend for a .243, for muntjac, roe, and fox. Thanks for the advice everyone.
  20. Im about to get a .243. I cant afford more than £250 on the scope...is a Leupold a good choice or does anyone know any other options in this price range that may be better. Its for deer and fox. any help appreciated
  21. I had the same situation buying firworks at tesco. I was with my girlfiend, both over 18, but i wasnt allowed to buy fireworks because she didnt have ID on her (i did). We walked out of the shop, i came back in on my own and bought them fine. pointless law!
  22. another good website is www.varmintal.com , have a look at the .17HMR testing. It might not help much with the fox question but im sure ur find it a good read having just got a .17HMR. It shows the impact of ballistic tips v's Hollow point, and much more.
  23. I havnt had mine long but Iv shot 1 fox while out for rabbits, 60 yards front on in the chest, dropped on the spot. Having said that I wouldnt shoot at a fox much further than that although im sure a head shot would do the job at slightly longer ranges. Im looking at .22CF's for foxes!
  24. Iv added DOB and location, is there anything else I need to fill in?
  25. As a student on a tight budget, Im trying to decide which .22CF to go for for foxes and possibly occasional Muntjac. Does anyone know which .22's are best value second hand? .223 was my original preferance but they seem to hold their value and therefore cost a bit more second hand. Is there a reason for this or is it just that there more popular. .222's seem cheaper. I shouldnt choose on price but i dont have much choice. I just need something that will do the job properly as I dont think my .17HMR is a humane fox rifle. Any help would be appreciated.
