if our pensions are linked to the arms sales, then they need to get their fingers out and increase those rates significantly. The pensioners of this country are still paying for the previous wars the country stuck it’s nose into.. we need to start looking after our own before poking around in other peoples issues.

The current shares are worthless as the business is insolvent after defaulting on it’s dents. It will go under temporary Government control whilst they find a buyer ( someone will get it for nowt ) who is willing to invest significant capital. They are close to putting there ‘super sewer’ into operation which should improve the appalling situation with discharges into the river Thames, it would be a travesty if this project is delayed any further.

why make a fuss? They went there knowing what they were getting into and the risks that come with it. If they wanted to give aid they could have helped homeless veterans on the streets of the UK, or volunteered in a foodbank in the UK, or countless other UK based charities. Oh wait! They were paid ‘security’ advisors not aid workers, that’ll explain why they didn’t do charity work in the UK.

Maybe it’s only an outrage if the victim is not a Jew. What happened on 7/10 was bound to illicit a response from Isreal, and that response should continue until the threat is eliminated. The attack on the aid convoy may not be an accident, no aid is reaching the area since the attack on the aid vehicles, could that have been the plan all along?

“Contract” what contract and with who? And for clarity the other industries I mentioned do take Tax payers money, do you have the same objections? They have regulatory commitments to deliver potable water, remove and treat waste water rather than a contract with their customers. The price charged is set by OFWAT across a 5 year AMP (asset management program ), the water companies put forward a program of work, and the costs involved at each price review, OFWAT then decide what can be done, what can be spent and what can be charged to the customer. The water companies then search out the funding based on what they will charging over the next 5 years, they need the funding as the work has to be done in advance of the customers money coming in just like any other business selling a product or service. It appears you don’t understand shareholding is investing, dependant on how the investment is set up the investor may still be entitled to a dividend even if the business makes a loss ( now there is a contract there ) “Staff pensions”, no. Pension funds invest in Water companies as do state funds, if the business falls into bankrupcy then their investment is lost and working peoples pensions suffer. ALL water companies are broken, under charging has led to decades of ‘fix on fail’ instead of investing in new infrastructure. Population increase, climate change, changes to building practices, and other environmental challenges have all impacted on the industry and still no one wants to pay the required rate…. The companies are far from perfect, and by a long way, but they are also being held back from doing some things they want to do to improve the situation. As an aside, Thames waters main problem comes from the Australian equity fund that asset stripped them to the tune of £14billion. What we need is public ownership by region but without the return to 70’s style public ownership, run it like a business with the customers at the heart of what it does. If you ever get the opportunity to talk to an employee of Thames, I sure they will fill you in on how much good work does get done by dedicated shopfloor workers…

tax funding private companies, do you mean like the Railways, Nuclear power etc.etc. what money “required by the contract”? Whichever way you slice this the customer has to pay in the end, the price we have been charged has been to low since privatisation and it just wont allow the level of infrastructure investment required. Investors just loan money, they expect a return. It’ just like when someone takes a car loan, the bank wants the money back with interest, if they think it is not a safe investment they won’t loan you the money and the car stays on the forecourt… I’d also like to think that Public ownership means the shareholders get nothing, but thats not what will happen. The damage to the Pension funds would be massive, then the pension shortfall has to be covered and that’ll be us tax payers..

To improve things we need to forget the past mistakes from: Governments of each party, Ofwat, EA, Executives at the water companies. The price paid could not provide return to the investors and improve infrastructure at the same time. They all knew this but also knew it would be someone elses problem further down the line, well we at the end of that line.. It could work without being private, but it would require us as customers to pay the rates required. At present private equity gives funds in advance and takes a dividend from the operating profits, that same model would work for government investment. They borrow the money and pay it back from the dividends rather than taxes, it just needs the regulator to change it’s current practices. Change the current AMP timescales from 5 years to 10 years giving the businesses a longer term planning process, increase the price to the required level for sustaining the infrastructure and then link it to inflation. Give the EA the sqme level of power that the DWI have, fund both the EA and DWI to allow full staffing and we then have effective regulation. IT CAN BE DONE BUT IT NEEDS PAYING FOR, easier to sell the price increases when you show that the profits are going to this Country instead of foreign investors.

That’d get my vote, although prefer regional as we’ve loads of the bloody stuff here in the North West. Plus I work for them 😂 I’m happy to critcise the Tories on this and much more

True, but they class that as National infrastructure and a Public asset.. A reservoir is Regional infrastructure, and a Private asset belonging to the Water Company. It would be like Tesco deciding to put a Petrol forecourt on your front lawn whilst ignoring your protestation. Water should never have been privatised, but criticisng the Tories on this Forum is like signing your own death warrant…. Re-Nationalising it would be a mistake in my opinion, it should remain regionalised but put into Public ownership and all profit retained within the region that generates it.
