WET AND WINDY AFTERNOON

I managed to wangle a day off today to try out the pigeon shooting on one of the new farms i picked up last week, I got to the farm about 11am and met the farmer who showed me round his land then left me to it, I sat at the end of a big field under the corner of his neighbors wood and watched for flight lines, after about 45 minutes it seemed clear that most of the pigeons flighting around the area were heading for a sitty tree at the other end of the field so i set my hide under the tree with 12 silosock jacketed full bodies out on the stubble and sat back, within a couple of minutes they started to come to the deeks and continued in a nice trickle until about 2pm when i tipped down for about 45 minutes and nothing was flying, as soon as the rain stopped the birds were on the move again, even more eager to come in than before, i packed up at 4.30pm and picked up 86 woodys and a crow, I picked up 3 more on the way out further up the field so the final bag was 89 plus the blackie,

the pheasants didnt seem to pay much notice to the shooting, at one point there were 3 wandering around amongst the deeks about 25yds away, and one even came to within 10 feet of the hide and sat watching me shoot

they were shot over wheat stubble, it had rained in the night and i had a feeling that the fresh drill would have been too sticky, they dont like big balls of mud on their feet if they can help it,

when i was driving out through the farm yard the farmers wife stopped me to ask how i got on, i told her that i'd seen 3 roe does in the field as i was leaving and asked if she would mind if i came back when they were in season to try and shoot one but she wasnt interested, she did ask if i would come and shoot the rabbits in the fields and some rats around the farm yard, she said they had 3 other farms with lots of rabbits and would i have a go at them aswell, dont really fancy pinging rats with a rimfire around the buildings so i may be looking for a PW member with a high powered air rifle at some point to help out
