VULTURE
Hi can anyone offer advice on how to remove a stuck choke,I have tried a little local heat with a hairdrier and dribbled oil in as best as i can but no joy,any ideas anyone. Cheers Vulture Ps the gun is a 20g Browning gold.
hogey
Hi Try putting the choke key in a vice then heating and putting gun to key and use gun instead of key to give you more purchase. I did this and it workred for me.Good luck
clayman
Hi Try putting the choke key in a vice then heating and putting gun to key and use gun instead of key to give you more purchase. I did this and it workred for me.Good luck Lucky if a Hot Key worked for you as that would suggest that the heat is expanding the choke tighter into the threads. I soak stuck chokes in penetrating oil for at least 24hrs ( barrels down into a jar full), then apply quick heat from a micro-waved gel pad to the outer barrels, or hot oil etc, to expand them slightly. The key in a vice is a good idea, buy be careful to engage the chokes well as its easy to muck up the slots. I think freezing the key ( so the heat loss shrinks the chokes slightly) might be better than heating them, but what ever works is the way forward! lowlander
i read somewhere that you had to soak them in coke overnight, but when i got my chokes stuck i clamped the key in a vice and twisted the barrels and it came undone really easily lowlander Edited October 25, 2009 by lowlander
PWD
A very good penetratin oil for the job is plus gas ...far better than WD40

VULTURE
Hi all, After trying the suggestions you have posted and still no joy i decided to use an old trick i learned from an old guy i used to work with,he would run a bead of weld round a bearing that was well and truly stuck, allow it to cool off and they would pop out easily. it was a bit of a job to get the weld in the choke but it worked ,came with no fuss, ruined the choke but barrel is fine new choke fitted with oil,all done. Thanks Vulture.
Pigeon_snIPer
Im sorry i couldnt quite catch that. Do you by any chance have any pics of the process. Thanks /s/
mag357
Best tip I was given when I got a choke stuck was to put in a jar of deisel and petrol 50/50 and leave to soak for a few days. The diesel and petrol mix will eventually 'wick' up into the threads and removal should be easy. Cosd
Hi, Mine were stuck fast and just couldn't get them to budge. Admittedly I didn't try the soaking in diesel trick, but did spray them etc but still no joy. Went to B&Q with my choke key (mine is the usual T-bar shaped key) and bought my self a length of steel tube that fitted over the T-bar on the choke key. The fitting wasn't snug but close enough. Took it home and cut two 4" lengths, slipped one on each side of the T-Bar which allowed me to get a good grip on the choke key and with some strength managed to loosen them. I keep the two tubes in my tool kit now just in case......

Cant see what running a weld around the choke has done for you except to just heat up the choke - you are are lucky it didnt make it worse as it would have expanded more than the barrels because of the direct heat - probability is you have locally overheated the barrels and weakened the hardening on the threads, leaving them more susceptable to damage in the future. If you want to apply hot and cold, use a heat gun gently on the barrels and a freeze spray on the choke.
VULTURE
Hi the trick of running a bead of weld around the bearing is the sudden warming up of the bearing breaks what ever bond is holding it stuck and when it cools right down the bearing actually is slightly smaller that what is was to start with,i've done this loads of times with bearings on engines etc and it worked with the choke although it ruined the choke, the barrel was undamaged. I don,t why steel gets smaller after a heating but it does, are the any metalurgists on here who could explain this. Cheers Vulture
covlocks
I don,t why steel gets smaller after heating but it does, are the any metalurgists on here who could explain this It doesnt - if it did manufacturing would have a nightmare on fits and clearances with engines and sealed bearings/ gitt seals wouldn't work. The temperature shock just breaks the bond.
