Hey there guys. Hope all and everyone is well.

I am applying for my sgc very soon and trying to work out the costs of it all.

i.e gun, cabinets, cartridges, gun slips etc

Maybe someone could tell me what you roughly spend per month or year of keeping a shotgun.

Thanks

Sam

It cost me...

Cabinet ~100

Gun £150

Slip £20

Cleaning Kit £20

I probably spent £100 on Game cartridges in my first year but several hundred more at

clay grounds, say £40/week every other week for most of the year.

I got my gun for a good price, but you'll get something to start with for £3-400.

I got a top of the range Escort semi for around the £300 mark

and bottom of the range Beretta SP3 for £1200

Is that the right way around

2nd hand gun cabinet either 4 or 5 gun for £50

Cartridges just depend what you are shooting to be honest, and how often will depend on how many cartridges you will purchase. But if you buy 1000 at a time they should last you a while if just clay shooting on a sunday morning.

Enjoy

brillant thanks guys. i will moslty be shooting clays and pigeons.

only need a 2 gun cabinet. for my rilfe ( with scope ) and then the shotgun. can you recomend one for under £200?

Brattonsound SL5+ its a 4/5 gun ( 2, maybe 3 shotguns and a large rifle at a push) with a locking top box.

I got one delivered for £128 but that was last year so maybe they have gone up a bit.

DON'T get a 2/3 gun cabinet, they're really tight for 3 guns (they're tight enough for 2) and there's a good chance

your collection will grow.

The 4/5 gun cabinet is only ~£10 more expensive and it'll save the hassle changing fittings and getting it

re-inspected at a later date!

Good advice here, I recon when they say 4/5 they mean 4/5 cardboard cutouts of shotguns.

The gun is your main expense. Watch it: you start out thinking you'll spend £X on a reasonable gun. Then you realise for a bit more money you could buy a [nice gun], so then you're spending £Y. Then you see a [really nice gun] for a bit more cash, so you end up spending £Z. It can quickly run away with you.

As someone else said, once you've bought everything, had a few lessons (recommended) then it's just the clay fees and catridges.

Be warned: it's addictive!

im going to have a few more lessons at my local clay shoot. £60 for gun hire. 75 clays and cartidges..

I think ill be able to have a total budget of around £5-600.

Where is the best place to buy the Brattonsound SL5+.

Do i need to have it installed before an inspector comes and looks at it?

Because of its weight and size-you'll probably be better off getting a cabinet from your local gunshop instead of getting one off the net unless the shipping is either free or cheap.Saying that though Paul Hart on here does cheap gun cabinets so PM him because even with shipping the savings should be good. You will need still rawl bolts though to fix it to a wall and the cheapest place is a builders merchant-just make sure you've got a big enough drill bit!

Whether you fix it prior to the FEO's visit is divided. Some say wait until he comes so he can advise its location, but the law simply says it should be out of sight of casual visitors so if you've got a spare bedroom or understairs cupboard-use it.Others say fix it beforehand so he can inspect it while interviewing you and saves a follow up visit.Phone your local firearms department and ask what they think is best because different areas may have different guidelines.

Tuition - thats a little on the high side, but in any case I wouldn't do any more until you have your own gun.

Budget - thats a personal thing but I think you should look at £1k as a good target. You will only want to trade up with your Ear Defenders etc once you try other peoples gear.

Check the internet for prices - I bought from Uttings which was the best at the time - but they are all shipped direct from Brattonsound. I now have 2 cabinets, as everyone says you always buy more guns than you think you will, plus I keep my Air Rifles caged up as well.

Yes - install before the inspection. They will only hold up your application and come to re-inspect, so install now. Shows confidence.

If my missus is reading this not very much at all OK V you can stop reading :hmm:

cabinet 5+ gun £130

about 1500 carts per year (not as keen on clays as once I was) £220,

shooting assoc membership £64,

accessories ( Gunslip ear defenders shooting glasses) £45

add in whatever you want to pay for a gun, and suitable

clothing and possibly a cart bag Barbour pockets are as good

if you are that way inclined. Oh aye and get a decent comfy waterproof

pair of boots waiting on stands is murder on your feet when its frosty.
