death from below
They weren't good enough to qualify - tough - their absence is no loss to the tournament - france are a spent force in world footy and will do sod all in the finals. Argentina would have beat England that day whether he handled it or not. France were not a cert to beat Éire.
ollie
Ollie - you are starting to sound a little silly. Why is Ireland getting cheated out of the World Cup finals different or more important than someone getting cheated out of winning the Premiership or any other competition? I went for United because you mentioned them - not me. As for admitting Rooney and Ronaldo cheat, but saying it doesn't matter - you will have to explain the insane logic behind that one because it beats me. I trust it will baffle anyone with a brain cell. http://golf.about.com/u/ua/rulesofgolf/golfcheating.htm http://sport.stv.tv/world-sport/123679-spo...t-for-everyone/ Excuse me Gordon, if you can find where I said it doesn't matter that Rooney and Ronaldo cheated then I'll hold my hands up? If you want to get into name calling by saying I don't have a brain cell then thats your choice but I think you need to grow up a bit and read my posts properly before you comment. Also I never said that golfers never cheated I said you could probably count on your 2 hands how many times it happens.
Gordon R
I will freely admit that Ronaldo and Rooney have cheated in the past and as for the other players are fouls not commited in every game so that is irrelevant. When you grow up you might recognise the quote, unless you start quibbling that "irrelevant" doesn't mean "doesn't matter". Perhaps you should read your own quotes before getting in to a battle of wits without the means to defend yourself. I trust you will now hold your hands up. ollie
I admitted that Ronaldo and Rooney cheated, I didn't say it didn't matter. Of course it matters if a player cheats, it doesn't matter what team they play for. To be honest Gordon I can't be bothered with your biased English views anymore, but to question someone's intelligence when you don't even know them is a bit out of order. Gordon R
Paul 65 & Gordon R:Don't give me this, are you saying if this had of happened to England would you's just accept it and move on ? b ull****. Ollie - I'm getting the drift of your argument now. It's okay to question my honesty, when you don't know me, but I can't question your intelligence. How does that work? In respect of the above quote - I did move on and am not upset by Maradonna - it happened - it will happen again. ollie
Gordon I think its fair to say we're not going to agree on this issue so we will agree to disagree Anyway here is the latest http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/i...als/8375320.stm. An 'extraordinary general meeting' ? It says in the report that an extra ref might be used as in the Europa Cup matches, why can't they just bite the bullet and introduce technology? Even a trial period during an underage championship to see if it would work.
Gordon R
Ollie - I agree. Nothing personal - I thing you are wrong. I do feel sorry for the Irish - a lot, and I mean a lot, of my relatives are Irish (the McNamee's of Donegal), but you can't turn back the clock. I would sooner make a friend than an enemy - so I am holding out the olive branch. Edited November 23, 2009 by Gordon R
paul65
Ollie, exactly as you say - why don't they introduce the technology? We WILL see cheating in every match in the finals. Can you imagine if that had been the World Cup Final and this incident had occurred? It would make a farce of the whole tournament. FIFA are running that risk and allowing the referees and players to carry the can. I don't understand why they are so anti-technology. ollie
Yes Paul it would've been a nightmare if that had happened in the World Cup Final. But I think the authorities are being very unfair on officials; I mean not every official can see every incident and its only a matter of time before a major tournament is decided by act of cheating and the ref in question will have to live with that the rest of his life. If NFL, Rugby (both codes), Tennis, Cricket can use technology why can't football in some capacity.

Yep, the ref would forever be known for that, there would be death threats and all that. If a team from somewhere like Columbia lost out, I'd say the ref would be at serious risk, Refs have been whacked out in some of those South American countries. It's completely unfair on the referees, they will be tried by TV, they should be able to use it as a tool to help them. They already do it on the sly, the 4th official has been known to advise the referee based on a replay on the big screen.

Was it not in Columbia after the 94 world cup that the player was murdered for scoring an own goal in the group stages. Crazy and totally unfair. Crazy and totally unfair. It was ANDRES ESCOBAR, the Colombian defender whose own goal against the United States helped eliminate his nation from the World Cup. Rob.
