Onnet7
Hello, My friend and I have brought a couple springers (Edgar Brothers Mod. 60 S) for plinking purposes, as we currently shoot .22 rimfire at a local club and would like something we can shoot a little more frequently. My friend's father owns a patch of land which meets all the legal requirements to be able to shoot on, and we're both old enough (I am 17, and he is 16) to shoot unsupervised there. We were just wondering what the laws are with regards to transporting the air rifles there? I presume you can't just walk out in the open with one, even if it it's unloaded and in a gun slip/ bag. Not that I'd want to, though- something tells me that in today's climate I'd have a van of armed men wielding H&Ks screaming at me before I could say 'NANNY SATE'. We were planning on getting a lift to a nearby location, then walking from there- but it's still a small distance. Will someone over 18 have to be present with us on the way down? Thanks for the help, Onnet. Edited November 19, 2009 by Onnet7
Billy.
You can actually carry a gun in a public place, so long as it is unloaded and in a slip or case. You would probably need a good reason for having it on you, as you don't exactly have a need for one in the middle of a town centre. Always keep it in the slip in the car. When you get to your destination, remove it from the car and if you're on the land which you have permission to shoot, you can take it out of the slip, so long as it is safe to do so. The law has been changed and if you are under 18, you must be with someone who is over this age (Someone please confirm this, as I think I said this before and got corrected! )

I presume when you say you think the laws changed and someone over 18 will have to be present, you mean on the way to the grounds? I am pretty certain it is between 14 and 17 you can shoot unsupervised. Thanks again.
Billy.
I think I might just be mixing the purchasing age with the unsupervised age... Anyway, I wouldn't worry about the public place thing. Me and plenty of people on here have taken guns through airports before without issues, so if that's possible, practically anywhere is (with a reason, of course!) Dave-G
The age bit is so screwed up it makes my head hurt, typical legal gobbledegook - but age allowed - provided you are walking to or from a place that you are authorised to use the rifle(s) then you have "good reason" to be there with them. In the event you get challenged it would help your case a lot if you can immediately show written authorisation to shoot at the place you claim to have permission on. libs
No air rifles in public for under 21s . It makes me wonder though, I could walk straight down the highstreet with my Beretta 12 bore, but not my old BSA meteor?
3jackwhite3
you can shoot unsupervised with an air rifle at the age of 14 but can only lend it you are not aloud to be gifted one and you have to be 18 to carry one or buy one. drut
http://www.basc.org.uk/en/codes-of-practice/air-rifles.cfm Reading it makes the 21's seem right. Airguns seem to come in for special rules these days
Dave-G
http://www.basc.org.uk/en/codes-of-practice/air-rifles.cfm Reading it makes the 21's seem right. Airguns seem to come in for special rules these days I'm guessing it may be something to do with the fact that any muppet could be carrying a 12ftlb air rifle but a person with something more potent would have passes a certain criteria to get their SGA or FAC.
