Keeping working dogs kenneled outside

I've been spending a bit of time reading through this section over the last couple of days and I've noticed a fair few people keep their dogs kenneled outside.

Is it ok to keep dogs purely outside and spend a lot of time on a daily basis on training them and exercising them or would this be considered cruel?

I'm quite keen on getting a dog in the future but would not want to keep it in the house. I do a fair bit of mountain hiking and generally walking around in the evening so getting it a good bit of daily exercise wouldn't be a problem.

I'm thinking in terms of a HPR type breed like the german wirehaired/shorthaired pointers.

Shouldnt be a problem at all, as long as they have a decent draft and water proof kennel.

Some people say the dog appreciates you more if it kenneled outside all the time.

I have a mate who has a terrier that never goes into the house and it doesnt seem to cause any problems

I live 3 doors from a champion trainer and his dogs live outside with no bedding on concrete floors-one has a plastic bed but again no bedding-never seen such healthy dogs.Springers by the way.

I wouldn't do that as the dogs can get soar's from just lying on bare concrete but nothing wrong with kenneling outside. Just keep women away. After getting a few of those bloody expensive galvanised pannels and a good dog house my mother has decided it's too cold outside now

Although once it warms up a bit the lab will be moving out asap!!

The level of ignorance from so many 'breeders' and 'trainers' makes me sick to my stomach.

From the new Dog Welfare Code

"Provide your dog with a comfortable, clean, dry, quiet, draught-free rest area."

Concrete isn't comfortable!

How would a gsp/gwp like living outside though? I have been thinking about which breed to get and would like one that can go outside through the day. My brother used to have a gsp that hated been outside even through the day so much it eventully moved inside all the time and these are very similar to the weimaraner my mother has, they not only have thin skin and very little hair they also seem to require more interaction with humans. I would think a gwp would be a better equiped dog for living outside.. I would be interested if anyone has any more experience with these breeds been kenneled outside because I'm now leaning towards a cocker because I feel these along with springers and labs lend themselves to been kenneled outside better....

I got my dog from a breeder who kept them in an stable block and then had runs with in the stable/stall things the horses would have been in with saw dust on the floor and and shallow wooden box for a bed with a thick coating of saw dust for the bed. Me and my dad want to kennel him but as we have an inside dog already he is living inside and after 2 days is getting on okay however many people and no doubt most pickers up to outside kennel their dogs as they are likely to have 5+ dogs.
