MPT1
The whole building industry is suffering at the moment and it is going to get worse. Daily pay rates are dropping, operatives accepting the lowest price get the work. Many companies are profiting from this situation because the prices they have for the work were fixed when the market was high.

MPT1
Not blowing my own trumpet but i was on bucket load of cash not so long ago but now all the sell out one man bands are painting for £50 a day surely thats no good for the industry In the late 60s a site I was on was paying ten shillings a roll for paperhangers, in the course of a week that went down to four shillings and six pence. It is never good to work for little money but if you are working and prove your worth you can ask for more. On a thread before Christmas I mentioned a book "The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists" that was written in 1907 and was told by someone it was no longer relevant. Isuggest that everyone read that because it is, particularly in the Building Industry. This environment is good for the Building Industry, it's just not good for the workers. MPT1
My dad say's any fool can work for nothing ! Is your dad working? A hungry man would be glad to have a jam sandwich if he couldn't afford steak. Can I ask what other efforts you've made to get work other than this forum? Try getting a little leaflet printed, dress reasonably, choose any street at random then knock on every door in that street between 5pm and 7pm weekdays, 11am and 1pm Saturdays. You say " hello my name is Shaw this is for you" give the leaflet. "I'm leaving you my details, I'm a decorator, is thee any work you might want a free estimate for". Thats the basic cold canvass if you want more let me know. Trust me unless you are a total muppet by the time you've covered 30 houses you will have 2 quotes to give. shawi72uk
I find the other efforts and is my dad working comment a tad personal and rude but as you aksed i will keep you in the picture yes my dad is working (as a painter) i take it by you comments your a conservative maybe you cant see wood for tree but i posted a thread on here because peolpe with a hobby like shooting can be very far up the social ladder now my way of thinking was that if there are people on here that can afford a £5000 berreta maybe they aslo have the money during a recession to have some decorating done Cheers Tho do you want any painting doing Edited January 14, 2010 by shawi72uk

MPT1
No I'm not either a Conservative or a conservative person. I actually started my working life as an apprentice Decorator. I achieved City & Guilds up to Full Tech. Cert. I then realised that if you rely on people to give you work you would usually end up with the dregs price wise. Hence my advice which you didn't comment on to go and search out the work. Your statement regarding monied people having money spare to employ you, is without I hope seeming rude a little naive. The ordinary Mr&Mrs Browns of this world are the most reliable and generous employers. I do have decorating work going at the moment on two sites in London but we are full up at this time. I'm sorry that I'm not nicey nicey, but I am both practical and honest inwhat I say. Read "The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists" when you have time, it is relevant to you now and is considred to be a socialists bible.
Anni
Most of the people in Wimslow,Hale,Bowdon, cheshire are conservatives. and there the worst to work for in this day and age. Forget about them they will have the poles in doing it for peanuts anyway. They were the worst for screwing you when times were good You could just **** them off because there was loads of work about. Try at a few Estate agents, Letting agents, I know there very busy at the moment with most people having to rent because there not able to get a mortgage Good luck
MPT1
Cold calling is not illegal, however it is a bit churlish knocking on doors with a sign up asking you not to call. I use to canvass for work and carry with me "NO CALLER" signs a bradle and screw driver and when people complained about people knocking on their door offer to fix the sign for a tenner. Some bit others just laughed but some remembered that they did need something done. It is a pure numbers game, the more doors you knock the more people you meet the better you get the more work you get. God helps them who help themselves and God help them that help themselves to anything of mine.
Cosd
Shawi72uk, you sound like you will only go to work if someones house is of a certain size or the people own £5000 guns and look like they have money to burn!! You then talk about how rich your clients have been and the "bucket loads of money" you have earned! Maybe if you spoke more about the quality of your work and services you can provide, then you might get more response for offers of work. You never know, maybe a middle class person might dare to ask for a quote!!
