Puddytat
We've just lost our dog, but have been offered a border collie pup who'll be ready to go in oct. We havent had a collie before but we've always liked them. We know he'd be more energetic that our old dog, but thats okay. Our old dog got to the point where he would refuse to come on anymore walks Anyone got any tips on basic training for collies? We havent trained a dog before and would like to have a go with this one. Should be interesting! I figure NTTF knows his dogs, so have you got any tips, in easy language i can understand? lol I'll re-read your training plans for some of the others you've written and try and gain some insight from there too. The pup were actually getting was from a litter of 3, but apparently the bitch isnt very maternal and smothered the other two in her sleep, how will this effect the remaining one? Are we gonna make a big mistake getting this dog? Help!
Lurch
Are we gonna make a big mistake getting this dog? If you don't have stock or a working job for this dog (mountain rescue perhaps) then yes. I firmly believe that these dogs are unhappy if not being worked and make totally unsuitable pets. I know lots of people have them, but tales of agression and bonkers behaviour (rounding up children or whatever) are never too far behind. Lovely dogs but I still wouldn't trust them as a pet. (I have had several, but only as workers btw)
pavman
I am with Lurch My boss has a Collie he sleeps inside but has to be in a run in the day, he has so far knocked an old lady to the ground (insurance claim for new hip) Bitten the post man dug up all the flower beds at home and of at least 3 neighbours, and Chases cars given half a chance. He sent up an electronic canine fence and the dog runs right through it at max setting The dog has had all manner of training to include and animal behavioural therapist Boss was told this dog requires at least 10 miles a day (hard) exorcise and should only be used for herding etc and is totally unsuitable as a pet :*) I know all dogs are different and this one may be an exception, but there seems a fair few pointers to have a good think before you take it on, good luck what ever you decide. pavman
new to the flock
Boarder collies are working dogs. If you are not working them they have a tendancy to destuctive behaviour, and are constantly on the go. That being said working does not have to be in the traditional manner, you can become involved in flyball, agility, search and rescue, competition obediance, frizbee catching, or work her as a lurcher. Anything that will keep her mind busy as that is the part that has a tendancy to get into trouble. I know several that are fabulous pets but they all have a tendancy to be worked in one manner or another. My biggest concern would be that puppys from one puppy litters have a socialization disadvantage, which can lead to fear aggression. This too can be overcome if you take the time to really socialize her to everybody and everything once you have her. This means that as soon as you have her she needs to see new things and places aswell as people that visit. Once she has her jabs , she needs to go every where and see everything. If you decide to go with this puppy get her obediance started immediately at 8 weeks, this will help give her something to concentrate on as well as keep her in control. Remember to keep it simple and fun, and for a Boarder Interesting. They are a great breed and alot of fun. My Jen puppy is 9 months old and a dream to be with, mind you she has 2 other dogs to play with, 3 kids, sheep to work at the neighbors, and lots of acerage to run on supervised. Good luck , any questions just ask.

Puddytat
Well! Mum phoned the guy with the pup today, and had a long chat with him. They spoke about our lifestyle and that, and the fact mum would take the dog to work (on a small holding thingie) and such and stuff. The guy said the dog would be great for us and that he could help us get involved with the local flyball team too. We're gonna go see the pup in a few weeks time (its only 2 weeks old atm) and we have first refusal on him. So things are looking but im not going to get to excited because it will probably fall thru! Also, my tutor at college breeds and trains collies for working with sheep we have there, i'll ask him if theres any other work i could get the dog involved in. new to the flock
Do like I did keep the dog at college with you. Then you will have a helping hand to help put the dog onto working sheep.

Puddytat
that pup died But I've made my mum a fully signed up member of the border collie fan club She says she still want one. Anyone know any collie pups for sale? We dont particually want a KC reg one, or a fancy pants coloured one. Just a traditional coloured black and white pup, has to be a dog not a bitch. All we ask is that it comes from parents with nice characters really. And pref its in the Leicestershire area, not the north of scotland!! Puddytat
Well! Considering we didnt want a fancy KC registered dog...I have £350 worth of pedigree collie on my foot! We went to have a look at some today (200mile trip all together ) and we had a choice of 3 pups. Two were 8 weeks old, and then a 12 week old one. The 12weeker was originally going to be theirs but that morning, as they were sorting out reg forms, they very reluctantly decided they would sell him, because they didnt have enough time to train another on top of the ones they had already got. Anyways, that pup chose us, we walked in and he came forwards with the others and then sat bolt upright by my side. We had to have him, and a cuppa, little walk and cheque signing later, we were traveling back with 'Alfie' (who i think would be much cooler with the name Ziggy (as in Stardust)) So yeah, i'll post some pics as soon as we get some. The little darling is already sitting on command
