have recently been introduced to shooting air rifle's and want to go on a farm and shoot rabbit's and pest's .

Went to the only real seller in ipswich and bought an .22 underlever for £ 60.00 .

I then found out that the maker is frowned on , i brought a smk db4 .

i like it but need advice on rifle's whch are better in quality but at a starter's price range .

ipswich has load's of farm's , where can i find a list of farm's that are shooter happy .

The first and foremost problems with SMKS are simply that they are more than often not powerful enough to produce clean kills, or at ranges where they can, you'll have to be some sort of stealthy god to get into that range.

The other issue is accuarry, which is one that seems to change from rifle to rifle. I had a SMK19 for a while and it was producing 1'' groupings at 35yards that I couldn't knock for a cheap springer, but after about 1,000 pellets the ware took place and the zero would wonder, and the power level would change from shot to shot.

The other issue you will face is lack of general knowledge. I'm pretty sure everyone on this forum could list me every speicies on the general license, and on what conditions they can be taken. When shooting is to be partook, there are a hell of alot of laws that need to be considered, and very serious consequences if they are broken.

Not to be rude, but air-gunning is far harder than it might first look. Try taking a walk in the countryside and getting with 30yards of anything wild, and you'll find it's quiet a task. I think you best opition at this point would be to find yourself a local rifle/air rifle club, and learn yourself the basics.

Couldnt have put it better myself, club first, get your training, then a good British air rifle,

I use a BSA super10 and happen to love BSA's, but there are a number of top class British makers, Airarms, Daystate etc do your research first based on your capital available, get your kit then get profficient with it, then you may be ready for live quarry,

There are a few other gunshops in and around Ipswich, Mallard Barn, Stuart claytraps.

The Chinese one's are ok for paper but I wouldnt go for live quarry with them.

PM Me if you get stuck

Alan

thanks for the info as it is always welcome , as a beginner all info good or bad is a help , i work on the railway and am alway's getting in range of rabbit's and foul at about a chain (22 yard's) and dressed in bright orange , all be it most have mixxy .

as for the help with the rifle , the only shop at beginner's price is an smk wholesaler or a bait shop with rifle's £200 + so any advice with maker's at beginner's range other than smk would be most welcome.

knock on doors, farmers would want to talk face to face, rather than give permission over the phone to any tom,**** or harry

That worked for me (many years ago). If you can find farms that dont get much vermin control they might be glad to see you.

As far as air rifles go, my first one was cheap but it had good hunting power and was fairly accurate and thats all you need.

I sold a BSA lightning for 80 quid a couple of months ago Im sure you'd find something like that about.
