rad334
When I got my SAK mod for my 17hmr the gun dealer said "no need to clean them, there maintenance free" But this morning I took it apart for a look and it was full of grey **** that went every where when it came apart. The gap between the inner part with the holes in and the outer tube was solid with the stuff. I'm sure the mod wont work properly like that, but I haven't really noticed it getting any louder. Maybe I wouldn't notice the noise increase as it would only be gradually getting worse. Does anybody clean theres, if so how often? My mods probably had 400 shots through it. Colster
Never been quite sure on this one, I clean mine every now and then but some people will say they need a bit of crud in them to be fully efficient. SAK's importers website advises people not to open them due to the highly toxic nature of the crud inside. It's a bit like barrels really some people religiously clean them every time they put the gun away, others never touch them. I guess you probably don't need to otherwise the one's that don't clean would end up missing everything.
killer_pigeon
i clean mine after every 100 rounds otherwise the 17 HMRs start to stray all over the shop
nickcass23
I was speaking to an ex-army armourer and current gunsmith a while ago and on his advise I strip down my sak mod after around 250 rounds, it never affects the zero. He also told me to clean the barrel after every session(which I now do) this also never affects the zero. I'm shooting a Cz452 in .22 and .17hmr, as ex army myself if would be an offence to not clean your rifle after a session on the range so why would it be any different now? Look after your rifle and it will look after you!!!
albob
i have fired over 300 shots through my sak mod on my hmr and not cleaned it.i will only clean it when the zero goes off. when i have cleaned my sak mod,it takes a few shots for the noise to reduce and the sak to gunk up. al
Billy.
HMR mods need cleaning. It's a messy round and it'll eventually start affecting where your bullet lands. Every 500 or so, just unscrew it, take the baffle tube out and wash with warm soapy water. The utter bull that your RFD told you about them being maintenance free... You fire a few thousand through those SAKs and see how the bullet begins to erode the baffles. I can assure you that you'll be on the market for a new mod if you use it regularly enough. THEINVISIBLESCARECROW
I clean when I feel like it. Don't leave it too long or the sleeve will be a nightmare to slide off.
Dekers
I clean when I feel like it.Don't leave it too long or the sleeve will be a nightmare to slide off. I'd tend to go with that..but don't leave it too long as bits of crud will fall out back into your barrel or crown!!
Frenchieboy
I was advised to clean my SAK mod after about every 150 or so shots through my 17HMR as it's quite a "dirty" round.
