UKPoacher
At this time of year it's first thing, last thing or middle of the day if / when the sun is out. They won't venture far from their dreys until the spring weather arrives. On colder days it's a hit and run job to feed, drink and get back inside. Try lurking near the dreys and you might get a shot as they preen themselves after feeding.
faisal
I was only joking ,do some legwork, they might be active if the day is bright in your area too. In my patch on saturday they were very active. Good for me and bad for them, i gave them some lead. the .177 kind.......

bothbarrels
take time out and do a reccy, sit quietly in the woods and watch, food is scarce at the moment so they'll have to scratch around on the floor, the best time I've found is mid summer when they are on the acorns/chestnuts and walnuts, and the early autumn when they raid their larders. on our estate they also bash the beech tree saplings, you can also go with someone and do some drey poking to get them on the move. derbyduck
The best way is to poke them out of thier drays with lofting poles two or three of you two dogs for when they come down on to the ground GREAT fun especially at this time of the year ! we uesed to use air rifles to knock em off with and to keep them moving from tree to tree till they went down to the ground . have a go at it and i'll bet you enjoy it atb DD

If you want to bait for them then try the cheapest peanut butter you can find, just a teaspoon full will be plenty, then you can shoot them with whatever you like!!!! lasbrisas
Little ******** dig up my lawn looking for their nuts so I sit at the window, air rifle in hand. Couldn't believe my luck one day, there is a tree at the bottom of my garden which sits right in front of the window in question. 2 rats were sitting there on a branch, I took a shot and got the first and to my amazement the second didn't move or flinch so I got him with the second shot
