Thumpersniper
Hi, i have had a .22 for about 6m and have so far only used winchester subs and HV's. I have been quite happy with how they shoot but i decided to buy a selection of different ammo to see what shoots best because i visited a gunshop with more choice. I bought Federal Hyper velocity and Remington yellow Jacket, remington cyclone 22 and CCI subsonics. I was interested to see how they would group etc, the hyper velocity have an MV of 1500fps apparantly, does this push the range a bit further? or does the lighter bullet cause it to be less effective at longer ranges?. cheers
Dekers
I found the Rem HP Yellow Jackets, 1500ft sec quite reasonable in my Silhouette, with CCI Velocitors second, nothing HV was as good as the Subs. My lr is pretty much 100% a Sub Sonic tool these days, I use the HMR or WMR if I need more!!
tweedledee
i`v e been down the 22 hv route too.as the man says the 22lr is best suited for subs.i too use the hmr for longer distance. that said the 22lr can`t be beat for plinking or rabbit shooting on a big scale. the hmr/wmr is n`t the cheapest to shoot. Thumpersniper
tried the remington yellow jackets last night i was impressed but there was no wind at all and the rabbits where i went hadnt seen a lamp in months so they just sat there or squatted. Looking at the different bullets, the cci ones seem most uniform but sam f who i bought my gun off last year told me they dont perform too well in the cz so maybe they dont agree with the barrel or something. Havent got a wmr, am waiting for my .22-250 to arrive could do with something inbetween really for those 150 yard crows! hmmm save up again i think

Probably the HMR rather than a WMR, possibly a Hornet, not the first thing to come to mind though; but probably best is a .204...VERY big issues with overall costs and VERY fussy with ammo though, and to get it's best performance you need a LONG barrel, so not ideally suited for trekking around with either !!! Thumpersniper
ha! oh the options! i think my friend is getting a HMR so i will see what he thinks of it and accompany him to prove or dissprove some of the claims. ive no doubt its a really handy calibre but my police force told me i could have a .22 or a .17 and not both when i applied for a variation and i stuck with my .22. My dad has a hornet which is very effective maybe il go for one of them one day, im sure the hyper velocities .22lr must produce a decent group at 120ish yards? im off to try them now on some targets! ive got an 80 yard shed to use as a range so il have to guess what the group is like after that

At 120 yards I'll have 10p on it with you that it will look like a shotgun pattern!! The 1-16 twist of the VAST majority of .22lr simply does not suit HV ammo!! ATB though!! Let us know! :look: Edited February 13, 2010 by Dekers
George1990
Dad gets much better groups with the subs than HV's at any range. Eley subs work better than Winchester subs in his. I might try and use it one day but he's one of those lefty people, so I stick to my HMR.

Thumpersniper
best grouping i ever got with hyper velocity (yellow jackets) was just under 1" at 100 yards ?? i 1" at 100 yards is poor grouping then my groups must be attrocious, i thought they were quite good lol!! i enjoyed seeing how the different brands performed diferently and im really glad i tried them out. I drew some conclusions:- CCI subs did infact group better for me at 100 yards than winchesters even though they didnt work as well for Sam who sold me the gun last year! then in high velocity the best were Winchester Lasers then Hyper velocity the Remington yellow jackets were the best. At 100 yards subs were 3" low, high velocity were 1.5" high and Hyper velocity were about the same as high velocity. I have done no target shooting whatsoever except a zeroing every so often, how do you measure group size? is it the furthest distance between two shots there is? Deckers, il owe you 10p then! couldnt find 120 yards but managed a 100, the group was shotgun i suppose, a full choke one though :look:
Thumpersniper
here are a ew photos to see, because i havent seen anyone elses groups with a .22 at 100 yards il let you say if they are acceptable or do they leave a lot to be desired? i think the reticule in the scope is a bit thick, i had difficulty seeing the green cross, a dot or an X would be better for me next time i think! Winchester subsonics at 100 yards (the ones ive been using up till now) wasnt very impressed after having better groups with other brands today. The rile (CZ 452 .22lr i think it is a style or a sillhouette). Winchester LASER high velocity Remington Hyper velocity yellow jackets Remington cyclone high velocity cci subs hollow point Federal Classic hyper velocity (the one hole higher up is the first shot when i aimed on the cross, for the other 4 shots i aimed at the bottom of the cross so it wasnt a real flyer! I was shooting these outside resting my elbow on an IBC container. There wasnt any wind to blame anything on so what do you think? Thumpersniper
haha o i see! u worried me then! that is a decent group you got there. I think i need a better scope, i have a fixed mag FOX scope i could put on it but its got a thick tube so il have to buy some bigger mounts. The mag on the scope i was using was 9x. when i hunt with it i usually shoot rabbits between 30 and 60 yards with the lamp and crows at about 80 yards ish. role on the .22-250 cant wait to be punching the 200 yard + groups! Ozzy Fudd
a 3-9 scope should be fine up to 100 yards, once i get the .17hmr ill be cutting back the ranges i use mine at

No need to beat yourself up about these groups, they are as good or better than many would expect, and that is the whole point of trying different ammo anyway!!! ATB!!!!
