Catamong
I found a field today, literally blue with Pigeons, been drilled 2 days ago, when I phoned the farmer to get the OK to shoot tomorrow, he said that it had been drilled with Oats. In all my years of shooting, I can't recall ever shooting over drilled oats..anybody ever shot a good bag over Oats..?? I'll post the result tomorrow night, the only possible snag is that they haven't yet been rolled in, and the farmer, (God bless him..!!), said he will be out tomorrow to roll 'em in, so who knows..?? Stealth Stalker
I asked Peter Theobold at the game fair if he had ever shot over laid oats, he said he'd tried it twice & never had any joy! He reckons they don't like the hairy texture. Don't know about freshley drilled oats though. Try it and let us know. S.S
M ROBSON
We had a nice bag of 102 on drilled Oats in the spring, the Pigeons were going mad for them. It was only the headland of the field that was drilled too, the rest got planted with Turnips later on. Mark.
Cranfield
The birds like drilled oats, but after that, they seem to leave the crop alone. A Farm I shot some years ago grew lots of oats and there were often large laid areas close to attractive woodlands, but the pigeons just ignored it. I think it has something to do with the ripe grain texture.
Catamong
Well, they certainly do like drilled Oats, I set up at 9am, just as the mist was lifting, weather was awful for Pigeon shooting, i.e. bright with absolutely no wind. They started to come in well from about 10.30, when a gentle Southeasterly breeze got up, and from 12 till 2 it was pretty frantic, with loads of birds about. I packed up at 2.30, and picked up 104 woodies, 3 crows and a magpie, so all in all, not a bad day..!!

Hendo
One of the farms I shoot on used to have all the fields sown with oats and I used to get really good bags of woodpigeons and crows. The area around this farm has alot of woodland and in the spring time hundreds of woodpigeons were in the area. The farmer said that the oats were used to feed race horses and he had a contract to supply them. He sold the farm 8 years ago and the new owner grows oilseed rape, wheat and barley so there is still plenty of pigeons around.Another good crop that is grown on another of my farms is spring wheat I shot a few good bags this spring on that.
