How expensive is a new car key?

I suppose most of us have had a new key cut for our motors used cost about

a quid, now with transponders its a bit dearer (yeah right a bit )

This takes the cake though the Aston Martin key "Do you expect me too walk Blofeld ?"

I was quoted £160 for a Range Rover p38 a few years back...

I was told by an Audi dealer that they wanted £250 to replace my keys should i ever lose them

Just got a quote for a toyota - £140!!!!!! :o

 

Mind you apparently, if the last key gets lost, they will charge over £1000 as they would have to replace all the ignition security, because they need one key to code the other (So they say!) Print, money, licence, to (rearrange) I say.

you lot need to have a read through your insurances from banks and buildings/contents ect, as some will cover lost car keys. i know Santander do one that covers all your keys and whatever they open.

You can normally find key blanks on the bay for about £30-these have the transponder inside that just needs programming and then the actual key shape needs to be cut-search your local yellow pages and you can usually find someone that does the lot for about the same price again-i've even seen the machines that detect your current keys "signature" and copy it to a new key for £250.Some shoe shops even do them.

My mate (who lurks on PW btw) has a Frontera and got quoted a bucket

load for a replacement key he went to our local locksmith Keyways for a quote

the guy popped into the workshop and within 5 minutes he had a new

transponder key for less than £20 beats the bejasus out of the £22k for

your Aston key/watch

Ok, talking to the wife and she says if you open an Santander Reward Account (although it costs £10 per month) you get all your keys covered, free travel insurance, card protection, green flag, lesiure vouchers...ect...ect..

I paid 140 quid for a new key card for my Laguna, 3 weeks later some dozy bint ran into the back of me and wrote the car off,what a waste of 140 quid
