al4x
yes 12b O/U probably 28" barrels and 1/4 and 1/2 or similar chokes will do you fine as a starter gun

MartynGT4
More of a clay man myself so I'm sure there are others that can give you better advice than I could, but I'll do my best... Gun fit is probably the most important aspect you need to consider. Try as many different guns as you can and find one that fits well, then look for the best example you can find for your budget. Remember that for a specific model a grade 5 gun has pretty much exactly the same action as a grade 1 example, it just looks prettier. And remember, all things being equal you'll shoot better with a £1k gun that fits than a £5k gun that doesn't. Another tip, when you go to your local gunshop don't start shouldering guns that are realistically out of your price range because you'll set an expectation that a gun within your budget may not be able to meet. Also, don't be put off by the thought of buying a used gun, there are bargains to be had and you'll more than likely walk away with a better quality gun than you might have been able to buy new, I did. Then again, you could be minted, drive a holland & holland range rover and have £10k to spend. If you are, then may I be the first to say you're a lucky ****** and good luck! COACH
12g, o/u, single trigger, 30inch, 76mm chambered, Sporter. Will shoot ANYTHING you want to shoot. And the cartridges are the cheapset you can get. But it all depends on your budget of course.

Kingpin, hi, You don't need a cannon (sorry COACH) to shoot pigeon and game, so what al4x said except perhaps Imp by 1/2 or 1/4 by 3/4 choke as you don't gain all that much by going up one notch. Cheers

Cheers No I agree, but when you`ve been out in the fields and woods for a few months you do get the hankering for a bit of goose shooting and clay shooting and the gun I recommend will as I say shoot ANYTHING and use any cartridge short of the 3 1/2 inch. You wont have to buy another gun at all. It`s a fact that people with a lot of guns rarely shoot that well because you can`t get use to all the guns as they will all shoot different. All the best shots shoot with just one or maybe two guns if they are similar.

Hi Coach interesting post, having listened to your advice and that of a couple of dealers I am looking to buy an O/U as the S/S isnt ideal and while fun I do think it will limit my potential. Looking around I see that there are couple of makes in my small budget which would you reconmend in general of course. Baikal could go new but prefer S/H I think Bettinsoli S/H Lincoln S/H Rizzini (cheaper ones) same as lincoln? I like the look of the bettinsoli and one sold here recently for top of my budget but locally i have found a lincoln and Baikal (new) and possibly a bettinsoli anything to watch for on these? Budget wont stretch to a Berretta but perhaps a Lanber or Winchester? Looking around £400 mainly for clays. I saw an axiom in an old thread but no recent info like the idea of having 12g and 20g barrells available

COACH
It has to be a second hand Lanber Sporter, 28/30inch. The best Budget gun on the market without doubt. They`ve been around for longer than I can remember and everyone who has or has had one seems to love them. You can pick up a nice for £500 if you look around. Or save up for a while and get a new one. I get a lot of people turn up for a lesson and they don`t have a gun and want me to recommend a gun. They say I want a new one but only have £6/700. Every time I will say the Lanber Sporter. There`s loads of ex pupils out there with Lanbers that are very happy with their buys. How ever if I had to go for the others it would be the Baikal. They are just about bullet proof now, you will struggle to ware one out. The hand position on the stock can feel a little strange at first due to its shape but you soon get use to it. Or you sand it down, it`s easy. The Bettinsoli`s are quite troublesome with double discharges and ejector problems. The Rizzini`s are ok but they do tend to ware quickly where you can`t see it and get loose forends and also feel very heavy. A lot of them have palm swells on them as well which if your not use to them is cumbersome and uncomfortable. The Lincoln is not a bad cheap gun but they rarely fit any body which is a shame. Thanks Coach, what if someone wants to buy secondhand? and doesn't have £6-700 to spend, caused quite a stir with a SbS today, had a shot with a winchester 6500 trap felt OK but only tried 2 carts through it while its owner tried my SbS (he is an international DTL shooter i think)
mark dd
Hello, I'm new to the forum and i thought i had better introduce myself. I'm Mark and from Essex. I have been clay shooting and i have found that i suit semi-automatics better than OU's. I'm looking to buy a sx3 and wondered if second hand prices were resonable? as i have found a new gun for £795. any advice would be grateful. Martin g
I bought this lanber beginging of december 2nd hand and only 9 months old for £550, and love it. http://gunmart.net/gun_review/lanber_field_hunter/ I also found that buying my first gun was harder than buying a car.. Try as many guns in your budget and you will find the 1 that fits you best.. Although I couldnt wait for cert to come through to be able to get first shottie it took me longer to decide which gun fit me best and glad I took my time as it save me £150 on a different gun I was going to get.. gurus5000
I would go for a 12G O/U with Multi Choke as it gives you more options:)
mark dd
HI, I'D BETTER INTRODUCE MYSELF,MY NAME IS MARK FROM ESSEX AND I'M NEW TO THE FORUM. I AM HOWEVER EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM WHAT TYPE OF GUN TO BUY? I HAVE ONLY PREVIOUSLY SHOT A S/A BERETTA(URIKA) FRIEND OF THE FAMILIES,BUT I'M LEFT HANDED AND LOOKING FOR A GUN THAT WILL BE SUITABLE FOR CLAY SHOOTING AND PIDGEONS. THE FACT IS I'M PREPARED TO PAY UPTO £800 FOR EITHER A NEW OR SECOND HAND GUN. SO DO I BUY NEW OR SECOND HAND? S/A OR O/U. I HAVE READ ALOT OF PREVIOUS REPLIES BUT I WOULD APPRECIATE SOME ADVICE FROM EXPERIENCED GUN OWNERS. SINCERELY CONFUSSED!
HDAV
Hi mark, suggest you get to couple of the bigger dealers and try some for fit, L/H are rare but some do L/H models in both O?U and SA formats O?U are the norm for clays I would suggest trying to find a clay ground where you can have a couple of lessons and perhaps try a few different guns
