Making progress on my FAC

OK, some of you fine lads have given me some advice on what calibers to go for .... .22 rimmy for rabbits and a .243 for most other (fox and deer)seems the consensus.

I might just make a slot on my ticket for a 17hmr (you never know ........and Frenchieboy is cleary weakening now and falling for his hmr!)

I have over 1200 acres already police cleared for .308 The farmer is happy to do the letter etc. The land is split up into 3 areas all within 5 miles of each other. Another farmer will also do a letter for vermin/rabbit clearance on his land a further 700 acres (if he allows it on all his farms or smaller if just 1 which is the current offer).

What spec .22lr and .243 should I go for ? When I say spec...

gun (make model length twist SS)

Scope (mag, size mildot illumination etc)

Moderator?

Bipod?

Sling?

lamp/nv?

I guess for the .22 more of a basic but sound model as the distance for shooting is low. But, maybe the .243 needs a bit more quality for the demands for longer shots etc?

Then New or Second-hand ? does it matter about wear and how can I check it before buying?

The .22 depends on your budget, most likely would be a Cz 452 in .22lr, 16in barrel.model again depends on what you like, there is the American(which I have)walnut stock version, the Style, which is black synthetic stock.Moderator, most likely the SAK,good value for money, and the scope,go for the mil-dot,3-9 mag seems to be about the best, you won't need any more than that if you zero for around 60yds.IMO the best ammo to use is Winchester X subs,a lot of cz's have problems with CCi subs, tight to chamber, some go supersonic, and extraction problems.Lamp,i'd go for the Ledray GL4, fits on the scope.Bipods got to be a Harris. These are only my thoughts on what you MAY need, not hard and fast rules.

Rimfire wise you will have to go a long way to beat CZ for reliability, accuracy, choice and price for field work.

Centrefire is a different story. CZ offer a good range, so does Remington, Tikka, Howa, Browning, Sako, etc, etc.

They are all designed for longer distances than your rimfires and should all be able to deliver results in terms of accuracy and consistancy, once you find the right ammo to suit them.

Choice gets personal, all shooters have the best rifle for them!! :good:

malkie see if you can try a few guns before making the decision, try a .22lr and an HMR whichever you decide you won't go wrong with a CZ, as for the .243 thats far harder but most of the major makes will be fine just depending on budget.

Hey mate, the only reason I have my Ruger 10/22 up for sale is to make room for a .243 in my cabinet as i would like to go for my DSC1 some time this year and I don't want to get cluttered up with 2 different rifles for the same use (Small vermin). I will however state that while I love using the Ruger and can not fault it I find the 17HMR a little more effective as I don't have to worry about range restrictions to get a clean kill, say out to 150 yards which I would not think about with any .22LR on any live quarry!

It is not a case of weakening it is purely a matter of practicalities!

This isn't a dig or a put down of any sort pointed at anyone whatsoever, it is just clarifying the situation!
