Went out with Mac and Rab to a cracking bit of ground, with a very good count of roe on it.Went out about 5pm yesterday, and as we were driving up to the wood we could see at least 5 roe about 100 yards from the road.We parked up and stalked into them, getting within 60 yards, when a doe i hadnt clocked legged it and took the lot with them. The buck i was going to take was still in velvet with antlers not much higher than the ears.We carried on to where i get a great view for the roe coming out later in the evening, and there was already two does and a buck out.Mac had the camcorder set up,and i readied the rifle for the buck which was only about 80 yards, but he wouldnt stop and just kept coming and coming.Eventually i had to stop him with a wee shout, and i head shot him from less than 20 yards. He went straight down, and then i saw a fox legging it up the valley scared at the shot.I got on him and started squeaking, and he stopped immediately and and he dropped to the shot,at approx 180 yards.Mac had got it all on video, except for the fox going down, and after i watched it back i deleted it by mistake so he wasnt a very happy chap, and nor am i because it was a good clip.We gave it another hour, but i wanted to try the mother in laws before dark so we headed to the jeep.On the way we came across another two foxes, one about 30 yards sat watching us,but the rifle was empty and by the time i put one up the spout he decided that was enough goading.

Got to the MILs a wee bit later than i had hoped, and when i glassed her rough heather ground the roe were everywhere.Light was fading, and i could make out two bucks at least.I thought to start that the bigger one was a very good head, although still in velvet, and was going to leave him to clean, but the more i looked i decided he wasnt that long and quite thin so took him at about 160 yards. He went down to the shot and i waited 5 mins or so and took Rab over to find it.Id marked him wrong by about 40 yards, and was beginning to think that he had got up and ran off and to leave it till daylight, when Rab when a different direction, stopped, and then started trying to drag the buck back to me.Its a very big buck body wise, and the antlers are extremely wide and would have made a nice trophy so i will try and strip them if the antlers are hard enough underneath.A good start to the season, although the weather is **** again so probably wont get out for a while.Cheers.

good read and the loon looks chuffed to bits. Didnt think it would take you long to be out after them

Was a half decent evening weatherwise,so thought id make the most of it.Back to the usual now though, but might have a look out later.

Nice work and that does look like a great little valley you have there.

Blackpowder

Cheers fella.Great valley indeed.Foxes galore and it goes for miles with plenty of cover and trees,so the influx of new bucks is non stop.

Cracking report, pictures and video. By the looks of it the young un will be starting to show you a thing or two before long mate!

Start em young and keep em keen!:lol::lol:

Cheers again fella.I try and involve him in as much as possible when im out,and at least it gives them the feeling they are involved and not just following on.He carries his own wee rucksack and binos when ever we are out and he loves it.

Great to see the youngsters out

Had a look out myself last night .Saw plenty of Roe ,but only one had started to clean .

Havent seen anything even starting to clean yet.Putting it down to the weather but not sure.Hopefully things will dry up soon and make it a bit more enjoyable.

The good thing was that the deer I did see ,all seemed to be in good condition ! All the ones that were not 100% have gone over the winter I think ??

Last year we still had young velvet bucks well into May ..

Plenty time yet ! Good luck .

The wee buck from yesterday was very small, and hadnt fared that well over the winter by the looks of him.We have loads still velvet in May,but as you say its usually the younger ones.

A lot of the older mature bucks around East Lothian are mostly clean at the moment, just the yearlings and the rubbish that are still in velvet further north you go the longer they are still in velvet. :) i think would that be right sako.

We do seem to be that bit later in getting them clean, although some of the older mature bucks are clean the now.I think with the harsher winter we get up here is a major factor but i have seen two bucks nearly clean in Feb in the last few years with a milder winter.
