Spaniel
HI I have just been offered some fox shooting using the shotgun. Farmer is having some probs with them as he is lambing at present, so i said i will call in to take a look at the ground etc Do you guys think size 4s 32Grms would do the job close up or what other size cartridges would you reccommend. I was thinking about walking the ground at first just to get an idea of the layout etc, then i was thinking about setting up some bait, not sure what at present but if i was to bait an area for a couple of nights and then on the 3rd night lay in wait with the shot gun i may get a fox for the farmer. My goal will be to get my FAC, so will attempt to have a chat with the Farmer about this after a few outings etc Any advise about shooting Mr Fox with the shotgun would be appreciated as im going up there in the next couple of days Thanks

Saves all that waiting about for hours for nothing. Got plans if you want Bill
SSS
Shooting foxes with a shotgun is the most fun you can have with your pants on. When you get it right, like me and chunkyed did last night (thats another story), it is a brilliant feeling. Get yourself a WAM caller and sit with the wind in your face, where you know the foxes will be and call for it. Scan round every few minutes, and you will see a pair of eyes, glistening like diamonds, keep calling (put your heart into it, and really feel for the rabbit you are imitating, infact, imagine you are a dying rabbit) and he will come. Get him to about 20-30 yards, the closer the better, and let rip. Any load will do it because they come in very close. I use 36gram number 1's, because you get a denser pattern and pattern kills. 32 gram 4's will do the job fine, as long as you keep the range sensible. People will suggest using BB's or AAA's, but in my eyes, they are too big, and there is too many 'holes' in the pattern. Heladoxa has suggested using a live catch trap, which is a good idea, don't get me wrong, but if you have patience, and you know the foxes are there, get yourself out with the shotgun and lamp. I promise, if you get it right, you will be overcome with adrenalin and your heart will be racing, that is when you realise why you are out there, in the middle of the night. Good luck with it, and keep us posted

Spaniel
Thanks guys and i may take you up on the plans . Looking forward to getting up there, as i know he is having problems with them at present Is there any one type of bait, which would attract them better then another.....maybe its time to look out for some road kill Pheasies
SSS
I wouldnt bother with bait, they can be unpredictable at the best of times. If you are baiting to use a rifle, its no trouble, but they tend to smell you before they smell the bait. Like I said, get a good call, like the WAM and you will be fine. If you were closer, I would take you out to show you, shame really

debaser
Hope I'm not Hi-jacking, but I have a couple of questions. Where can I buy a WAM, google just gives me a weird domain stating the domain is for sale. Also assuming I can squeak one in to say 15-20 yards, I take it I'm aiming at the head? Finally I went into a shop and stated I needed some cartridges for fox shooting. I asked for BB's having read some advice on here and walked out with a box of SG's. I stated I had a fixed FULL choke and he said "it's only lead" I'm a bit reluctant to use these, so free for collection to responsible person. Cheers Dan

Spaniel
just seen some silver ones like the wam calls on the auction site £2.99..........but i guess you get what you pay for
WGD
just seen some silver ones like the wam calls on the auction site £2.99..........but i guess you get what you pay for The silver ones will be wigeon whistles Ian, they're not the same as the WAM calls but can be effective. Foxing with shotgun.... calling the in is the best way, but you'll be lucky to regularly call them into shotgun range unless the place is crawling with foxes. If you're baiting an area watch the wind when you intend to lie out and nail or tie the bait to a stake so it ain't whipped away when you're not looking! Good luck. activeviii
Ian, they will come into a call. i have PMed you. try to go a bit heavier with the shot. Darren will tell you what i use.lmao. no1 50g put him on his butt almost.lmao. foxcall.uk , blade type call is a good one and them the wam as a follow up. if the land is fresh and you can work it so charlie cant wind you then you will get then with in 20 meters, again ask Darren how close they will come another call that can work well it the dogs squeaky toy but you need to put a hole in it to control the air , just put thumb over hole as you squeeze and then thumb off as you stop. easier with two of you as well as one can do the lamps and calls and other can just concentrate on the shooting bit. All the best Phil.

Heladoxa
I'd still go for the live catch cage as being most cost/time effective. While you're all faffing about in the cold and dar and might shoot a fox maybe, I'm at home warm with a gin and tonic watching a black and white cowboy film :warm feeling:

I don't like Gin and Tonic anyway, much prefere a nice large glass of Jack Daniles!

Spaniel
Well Im off tomorrow for a walk around in the eveninga nd then see how i get on at dusk time. For now i have taken the tesco torch with red filter off the air riffle and i can attach it to the semi auto, I think i will have to go down the Deben Tracer Max or Light force route eventually as they both seem to sale fittings to attach these to the shotguns also.. Got a pocket full of Size 4 36Grms plus a couple of BB cartridges, so we will have to see how things go All very exciting to be honest
vole
I saw a big fox, looked in fine form trotting along the hedgerow where I used to see them before winter set in yesterday evening. I got under cover hoping it would come my way with a squeak or two but no way. We were the width of a small field apart but never saw it after it again when it went into the wood. I plan to get there again this week better prepared and with a lamp. Would love to get it before lambing starts.
