jim38curl
Hi all, After a really good weekend shooting at a new farm me and my brother in law have decided to buy a rotary device and to make use of the UK shoot warehouse discount. My budget will only stretch to the standard rotary which is on sale at £65. I see that i will need to buy a battery pack for it as it does not come with one.. would i be able to use a standard car battery to try and keep the cost down or should i get one of the shoot warehouse ones, if so would you recommend that i get the 17amp one for £30 or would a smaller amp be sufficient ? Am guessing that i will also need a charger for the battery, will a normal car charger be ok or do i have to get the shoot warehouse charger ( i'm not trying to be tight, just trying to save a few quid ) Also, does anyone know the difference between the standard rotary (£65) and the pro-motion rotary (£75). Seem to have the same descirption. And lastly, is the timer unit something that i can do without for now and get at a later date or will it not work without it ? And lastly, lastly, if i was to order tomorrow what do you think the chances would be of getting it by Saturday Thanks for any help, Jim. jim38curl
Cheers Mark. Spoke to someone a month or 2 ago that i got talking to from ebay he was a really helpful guy that was sellin the speed controller units. He made the mistake of offering help and advice to anyone interested in making a rotary so i thought i'd take him up on his offer and ask a 101 questions. It soon became apparent that with my mechanical knowledge i'd be better off planting a rotary washing line and spinning it by hand with some pigeons glued to the corners. If i had the first clue what to do i would give it a go but i just know that it will all end in disaster, costing me more than a new shop bought one and the other half will be well unimpressed when it breaks down or falls apart on the second day !! Cheers, Jim.

Cranfield
jim, try Maplins for the batteries and charger, at least you will get a comparative price. My view is that if you buy well in the first place, it will last and last. Try the link at the top of the page and ask ShootWarehouse direct, regarding delivery times. markbivvy
i have a mate who gets me wheel chair batteries, some are as good as new. but they renew them if they need it or not. just stick em on a car charger. if you go for the big battery get one with a handle. jim38curl
Thanks for that, just had a look at maplins they sell a 12v 40Ah for £34.99. Would this be suitable ? The shootwarehouse one is only 17Ah.. have visions of the maplins one blowing it up ?

jim38curl
Is that not cheap then ? Seems to be around the £30 bracket for all batts that i see. Was just budgeting that much cos of that. how much would expect to pay then for decent batt if you didn't get from mate ?
Will Beasley
The difference between the two machines is on in the adjustable angle arm attachment points on the Pro-Motion Rotary. This feature allows you to fly one bird low and one bird high. The battery we reccommend for any "windscreeen wiper" type motor is a 12V 17AH and this will give 8-9 hours continuous run time at a sensible size. Weight is 13.1 Lbs....considerably lighter than a car battery which can be had for a fiver. This battery can be charged either with a standard car battery charger or our own which is obviously smaller and more compact like a mobile phone charger for £19. You dont want to be using a timer unit with ANY rotor, they're for the Flappers, perhaps you meant Speed Controller?? If you were to order one today Wednesday before 12am then we can have it delivered tomorrow. Hope that helps answer some of your questions Cheers,

jim38curl
Thanks a lot for the info Will. I did mean the one for the rotary ( speed controller ) but in my ignorance of these technical things thought they were the same thing. So would i be able to use it then without the speed controller until i can afford ( get permission / grovel enough ) to get it. Cheers Jim. PS. Great delivery times !! Yeah of course you dont "need" a speed controller, especially at this time of year I prefer then flat out anyway. As it is if you just wire it up it will just spin at max revs of about 42rpm. Cheers Will

old rooster
12V 17ah battery £18 Denka branded, 12Volt 17AmpHour, Deep Cycle, sealed lead acid battery. My home made lighweight rotary uses a smaller battery so it can be lugged to hides where I don't have vehicle access but there is no point using that if I can drive right up and drop the gear off where I'm going to shoot. Mine uses less current as its a smaller motor than normally used, the efficiency is improved as I've fitted ball bearings in place of the old plain bearings. jim38curl
Hi All, ( Will ) Got rotary delivered today with batt and charger. Does anyone know if the batt comes with a full charge or do i need to whack it on for a few hours before use ? Also does anyone know recharge times after full or partial use ? Cheers, Jim. jonno 357
All batteries should when bought be fully charged. Its always best to fully discharge a battery then fully recharge it What is the charge rate of your battery charger ? Jonno
jim38curl
No Idea !! This is what it has written on it. PRI:230v-50hz 19.8w SEC: 12v ---- 800mA 9.6VA Sorry for thickness. 800mA ?? Jim.
jonno 357
800mA is the correct size for a 17Ah battery for charging. You won't do it any harm if you leave it charging overnight 500mA max for a 12v 7Ah battery Jonno
Will Beasley
to work out charging times: Take capacity of battery and divide by charger output. Your battery: 17Ah, so in Miliamps thats 17000 milliamps (Mah). So divide 17000 by the output of the charger and thats 800 milliamps = 21.25 hours from completely flat to full up. Some things to bear in mind, always try and keep the battery full, store if poss in a warm place. Leave it flat in your cold shed for a month and it will be knackered next time you come to use it. Bear in mind they self discharge over a period of time, so a top up charge every now and then is a good idea if yer not gunna be using it regular. hope that helps
