the_commoner
i was out for a couple of hours with the shotgun late saturday afternoon / evening just having a walkaround one of my permisssions with the dog after a few pigeons. I managed a couple, before i made my way up one of the boundarys, there were rabbits a plenty as they came out early evening to soak up some of the sun, most disappeared while i was 70 or 80 yards away so no chance of a shot. I did though manage to get into a ditch and lay on the side of the bank to watch a few bouncing around in the evening sun, 2 came out about 30 - 40 yards away and slowly made their way from the hedgerow into the field, i laid down on the bank and considered my shot, the dog was sat down in the ditch out of sight / smell of the rabbits as there was a brisk ish cross-wind to take any sound or smell away. After 15 minutes of waiting I slipped 2 cartridges into the yeoman and closed the gun gently, holding the lever to make sure it didn't snap closed. The dog knew what was coming as she relates the closing of the gun to a shot and possible retrieve and was raring to go I very slowly sat up composed myself and was deciding which of the two to take when one sat up, turned and hopped back to the hedge and home, knackered it i thought, but no the other having had a look, got it nose down and continued to feed, shot fired and one rabbit bagged, sent the dog for the retrieve and back she comes proud as punch i was walking back and decided to give sparkie a call, he was free and said he would bring the .17 HMR over and the quad and we could have a lamp for a few, my lamp was in the landy so it was game on. i walked the 15 mins back got the lamp out and waited for sparkie we set off just after 9, sparkie driving while i lamped the fields, and ended up with 6, (one lost) (plus the one with the shotty) before my lamp battery went, i must have used it more than i thought the last time out - so the night was cut short a tad, off we scuttled back to the landy and called it a night. All the rabbits shot were full of fleas which made us both itch like hell as we gutted them. All in all not a bad way to spend a few hours on a saturday evening. gottsy boy
all the rabbits i've been getting are also full of fleas more than normal, the last 5 have been that bad i used them for crow bait wich i don't do oftern, i think the long winter has kept them in the burrows for longer than normal i bet it's going to be a bad year for mixy.. Frenchieboy
Unfortunately when they are covered in that many fleas I fear that we are in for a bad year of Mixy in the rabbits, I hope I am wrong! Luckily I have not noticed many fleas on any of the rabbits i have shot around our way but there is time yet.
