Paddy Galore!
Hi chaps, been looking at a ruger in 25-06, seems like a nice piece of kit! Just one thing, it has a falling block action activated by a martini style under lever, now i've never seen one like this before and it's got me wondering... are they any good? Opinions please.. Harnser
very strong very stiff action which will help with accuracy . Although a single shot gun they can be loaded very quickly with a bit of practice ,certinly as quick as a bolt action . They are very popular in the states for taking the longer range shots on deer . Mungler
It's quirky and you will get bored of it quickly. Don't bother.
CZ550Kevlar
I have tryed a friends down at the range and found them to be noisy and abit clunky, they don`t glide like a bolt action does plus it means you have to fumble for a new round after firing due to no magazine. Paddy Galore!
i tried the action and it did seem smooth, the idea of it being a single shot is what endears me (not having to remove the clip or worse, open the trap door and risk dropping the ammo in a muddy field at night). I did a little research on the calibre, and it seems to good to be true, factory ammo in 100gr is a tad quicker than 243, also 120gr about the same speed as 100gr 243. Seems ideal for fox or deer, and not too big that i'd be restricted on it. Just wondering, how many of you manage or need to get off a second shot at a deer or fox asap? Rem223
I really like the Ruger no1 it has a classic look and as you say how often do you need follow up shots on a fox? I think they can benefit from some fettling though. They are not always as accurate out of the box as a bog standard Remington/Tikka/Sako etc. It's a good all around calibre. You can pummel foxes with 75gr Vmax at 3600fps or bowl over deer with 120gr slugs at 3000fps. There's a write up here on getting the best out of one. http://www.rvbprecision.com/shooting/accur...he-ruger-1.html
Dirty Harry
I have shot a Ruger No1 in .375H&H Magnum. It was a very nice gun and I like the action. I like the simplicity of it and it's very easy to use. Harry
JackReady
25-06 is a great calibre and much under rated here in the UK. Where we seem to be stuck on the .243 and .270. Ruger#1's can be fun rifles to own and shoot. Once you've had the triggers and fore end hangers sorted out by someone who knows what they are doing. There is plenty of info available on how to wring the best out of them on the excellent US forums. A good friend uses a 25-06 Ruger#1 for controlling hare numbers on his farm and regularly shoots out to 400ms with it using a bag rest off the truck roof.
