squabs

We get squabs all the way through the winter now. :hmm:

 

For years we'd never see any till about the end of March then about 4 or 5 years ago we started shooting them in February. I remember seeing over 35 squabs one February.

 

It seems in my area the woodpigeons are adapting slightly, we get a lot more nesting in evergreens in peoples back gardens in the towns. During the summer some of our strongest flightlines come from the towns. We even see the odd one now nesting in the corner of straw barns when we're out shooting the ferals, this never happened before. :)

 

Here's a picture of a young bird I shot on the 6th of Jan 2010 just after we had suffered a low of minus 20 and snow on the ground for 3 weeks!

 

It was in tip top condition...............and folk were concerned the adults were going to die off due to the weather!
