Teal
They say herons don't land in water but on land and then walk to the water, on this principle two strands of fishing wire at 1foot and 2 foot off the groun around the pond edge won't look to unsightly and could stop them. dunganick
has worked on our pond, and the one time it didnt i threw stuff from my room at it, it got the message when i started lobbing deoderant cans and bottle of water. havent seen one since this time of the year we have a net over the pond to stop leaves anyway, so we are fully heron proof
hawkeye
K R I used to have the same problem so i got some metal conduet pipe 3.5 ft long sprayed them silver with hammerite. Then tapped a piece of round wooden dowel rod into one end then screwed small hooks in to that on the side about 2 inches from the end, the type of hook used to hang net curtains is ideal stick them in the ground about 3 ft from the edge of the pond. Then go to your local hardware shop and buy a silver chain (small links) hang on to the hooks and you have a nice ornamental fence. As herons land on land then walk into water this stops them as they cannot lift there legs high enough to step over the chain, I used this for 7 or 8 years with not one fish being taken. When i moved house 3 years ago i built a raised pond thats seems to be working my mate that lives next door has regular visits from the herons but they dont bother mine. It also looks a lot better than putting nets over the pond like some people do hope this helps with the problem  Edited November 17, 2005 by hawkeye

Fisherman Mike
Herons will fly on a moonlit night and look for the reflection of the moon on water below to locate ponds in towns and built up residential areas you would never think they could find. Once located their sortees are normally at very first light so they can gorge on your fish and be gone before you awake from your slumber. The most effective deterrents I have ever used was a electronic scarer now used by my father who has some fish worth in excess of £1500. and a large plastic cat which was very life like and sat by the pond. Where it came from I dont know but it did the trick. If you can get one of those eagle owl decoys and stick it on a fence post that will probably work too. FM. Ferret Master
Hi, Whatever you do don't buy a plastic heron decoy. They are supposed to work on the principle that a heron will not land where another heron is feeding but I have seen 5 feeding on a small lake at once and I know of ponds where the fish have been taken with a heron decoy in full sight. Teal's method works as well or for the tradtionist Dunganick's method. FM

henry c
At my old house we had a pond and used a Bean and Pea growing net bought for £1.50 over the pond, worked a treat.

SNAKEBITE
put the dead fish on a rat trap by the side of the pond save,s u waitng up allnight for them rats? But are you likely to accidently injure a heron that way?
