Recommended Posts

take it easy and any advice you are given off here take it greatfully. unfortunatly i can not give any advice on this as the dog i am training is being trained to flush retrieve and work as i intend to to do some beating picking up and pigeon shooting from a hide. sorry i can not really help on this subject but i would say work on his sit, recall and retrieve but as it is a springer they will naturaly work any cover they see.

got a dvd yesterday but all i want is for her to fetch the game not hunt or flush im new to shooting and the dog was a prezzie of my daughter

As Chris says, a spaniel is a hunting dog so to expect it not to is a big ask. IMO what you need to do to achieve what you want from this dog is train it as a retriever, not as a hunting dog. THat will mean a lot of retrieving or varying types and difficulty, good heelwork and lots of patience and steadiness training.

Simple answer... near Doncaster.

Give them a call, I'm sure they'll help but don't expect to go picking up straight away as a novice dog and handler. These things take time and you and your dog need to be trusted. Depending on the dog and how much you put in I would imagine a couple of years but the trainer will have shoot contacts as well which may help.

Good luck and be patient. Once you're picking up with a good springer you'll love it. Picking up with a bad springer is no fun (except maybe for the dog) and I've seen it countless times.

Hope this helps

Mike

train it to hunt and retrieve, even if you dont want it to flush now you might want it to flush later  Get a good spaniel training book, I recommend Joe Irvings book "Training Spaniels"

Sorry, but I completely disagree. The OP wants a retriever.... so train a retriever, not a hunting dog. If you want a retriever to hunt, you can train and condition it to do it but retrieving remains the primary function. If you want a hunting dog purely to retrieve you switch on the hunting/flushing at your peril IMHO.

I think turning off the hunting and flushing on a Springer is no easy task. Might be wrong but i see many families out with a springer (not workers) and they all hunt whether taught or not.

If you train it right surely it will be able to hunt AND retrieve. Just because it hunts doesnt mean it wont retrieve. :sly: Although if its 99% for retrieving then a HUGE amount of training would go on steadyness, as it would anyway with teaching a springer to be a retriever :hmm:

Maybe Im wrong though :o Just tryin to help <_<
