steve_b_wales
I bought a new Freelander 2, two years ago. It came with Goodyear Wrangler M&S tyres. I need two new ones but don't want,or need to spend a fortune. My 'offroading' consists of farm dirt/gravel tracks and grass fields. The tyres are 235/60/17 What would be a good tyre for mainly onroad use (10,000 miles/year) and good enough for the above 'offroading' Thanks Steve. al4x
looking at it they aren't going to be cheap as seems like an expensive size. If what is on there is doing the job then it may be your best bet to stick with them, with a reasonable mileage BFG all terrrains if you can get them in the right size would pay for themselves in the long run just not cheap to start with
steve_b_wales
A local garage has suggested going for COOPER tyres, size 245/65/17. He says that they are good tyres with self cleaning treads. Price is £105 total.

I put Avons Ranger 70's (which are Coopers i think) on my Disco for the same kind of terrain, they've been through a lot worse and still not got stuck even when it was up to it's axles in mud. Designated 70/30 road/offroad, fine on the motorway, main roads etc, not too much noise and got them for £70 per corner locally. AB

Price is £105 total. looking about Landrover in their wisdom have fitted a really wanky sized tyre which no one makes  As your guy suggests finding a similar more common size is the best bet, if that price is per tyre then you have a fair range to choose from and may even get close to BFG territory, otherwise the general grabbers do a more on road biased tyre. One thing I would say is check the pattern first and make sure you know what you're getting, seen some garages call very on road tyres off road just to get the sale when the customer hadn't checked them first
ziplex
Steve, I put General UHP's on mine, (had the Wranglers on before).....they seem to wear really well and are ok for dirt tracks, fields etc, but the Wranglers are better for wet mushy ground. My only gripe is after about 15-20,000 miles they seem a little noisy on the road but have loads of tread left. Pirelli Scorpions seem to be a reasonable tyre too. I paid £90 each for the General's inc. fitting. You'd be hard pressed to get a better option than the Goodyear Wrangler's as an all round tyre providing you can get 'em at the right price Edited May 19, 2010 by ziplex

zab10
cant remember what size my freelander was but i got yokahama geolandar ATS which were good and well capable of the things you say you will use it for .
Vipa
BFG ATs all the way, they will pay for themselves in the end, they are tough as anything out there and as long as you rotate them often there's no reason you shouldn't get 40,000 miles plus out of them!!! badshot
Maybe see if there is anyone going from Kent to Wales with a van? My missus is always carting small stuff around when she visits her family in the wirral. Maybe someone else would do a favour for a drink. A bit of freecycling doesn't hurt now and then.
