V8landy
On the one warm day on my drive home I felt the temperature warranted the AC on. After about ten minutes I did not feel much cooler. On getting home, I listened for the usual clunk as the AC clutch engaged but nothing. Checked under the bonnet and belt still OK, but clutch not activating. Any obvious checks to do before taking to garage or AC specialist? Thanks PS car is a 1998 Mk3 golf Vr6
MC
It probably wants regassing. I had the same thing on a Vectra a few years back. Failing that sell it to ME

V8landy
I know its of little cosequence to you,but a garage local to me is charging £39 to regas aircon systems so the Halfords one dont look very cheap! You know how it is you see these signs for re gassing all the time, and then when you need it (i feel confidednt that is what it needs) and now I can not remember which garage I have seen it at! The more I think about it the last time I used it last year, and it was working then, I did not think then it was as cold as it used to be. So feel confident it is just gass that has leaked. How much should I expect to pay for a regas (not halford can type) Edited May 20, 2010 by V8landy
Imperfection
Phone round.Im guessing that the recent warm weather has encouraged people to get theirs recharged cos there not working so see who is doing it at a sensible price.
V8landy
Found this guy on ebay who is close, but does mobile regas, so could come to my work. £30 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CAR-AIR-CONDITIONING...=item2eacebcf24
bruno22rf
If the unit is not clicking then the pulley clutch is not engaging the pump-check the fuse-if its blown try another but if that pops then your pump or pulley clutch has seized. When you go for a regass think carefully-most pros will tell you that going to a non specialist could cost you dear-halfords-kwik fit etc have messed up a whole load of systems-they cost me £988 in repairs for mine.Dont forget that all systems lose about 15% of the gas per year-this includes the oil within the gas so if the gas gets too low you could cause your pump to sieze-be warned- if you own a newish shogun your car will be undriveable with broken air-con-this applies to a lot of modern cars. VicW
Car air-con systems should be run for at least 10 mins a week even in the winter to ensure that the components get lubricated and to prevent the seals from drying out. This probably what has happened to Landy's system. It will have to be regassed just to check it out. A specialist air-con shop will check for leaks and efficiency. Be very wary of the Halfords top up bottles. You may over pressurise the system and also does it contain the lubricant? Vic.
al4x
chances are its stopped because as said the gas is low, however it may not just be a top up job try and make sure they add die as well so if it leaks you know where its coming from
V8landy
Dropped it off at local garage during my lunch time, so as I type it is being re gassed. £40, and he does a full job, vacs it all out, tests it all, dye added oil added, then re gas. So fingers crossed should be icey cold on way home this afternoon.
JA3llis
Just a quick heads up guys the laws on aircon regassing is changing in july so expect to pay £70+ for a regass as it will have to go to a specialist as you need a licence to to it. So get that aircon regassed asap if you want it cheap.

V8landy
Well that did not last very long! Worked fine on Friday, did not use car until today on way into work….AC not working!!! Just been to garage and told him it is not working, but to busy to look at it today, so taking it back tomorrow. Looking at the condensor there is a bit of wetness on one corner, but surely if he checked it out properly before re gassing it he would have found this? I will see what he has to say, but suspect ne condensor will be required at about £100 to £
al4x
usually they put a die in, they are generally sealed systems so usually go down with either a mechanical fault or leak, fingers crossed its a simple pipe problem
