Try posting this in the permission section, but I find the best way is to mention peoples names, offer your help and do whatever you can. Look to getting a shotgun certificate as this will make you look more serious. Air guns are good, but only for the smaller close range stuff. Farmers will want pigeon numbers and rooks hit hard at peak cropping times. And it is BLOODY good fun!

Hope you get on ok.

Something may come up on this forum. However, I think you may struggle to pick up land by door knocking and saying you've only got an air rifle...

Get yourself a shotgun certificate and you may see other opportunities arise much quicker.

No you do not, just apply for your certificate and say that you intend to shoot clays and vermin.as long as you have been upstanding in the community-ie, not been in trouble with the police and when you fill in your form be truthfull about any convictions you have,do not and try to pull the wool over their eye's, as it will come back and bite you hard. i know a lot of lads who only go around shooting clays and don't shoot game etc.-----Dave

No, you don't need land to own a shotgun. So long as you don't have a criminal conviction (not strictly enforced, as some things are offences that don't really make you a dangerous person) and you are of sound mind, then you are legally entitled to own a shotgun. I got my certificate when I was 13

It's a firearms licence that requires land/club membership and a reason as to why you need a section 1 firearm.

No thats not quite right. You don't need land for a certificate, clay shooters don't always shoot live quarry! At the interview they may ask you why you want a sgc but you need only answer to shoot vermin or clays and don't need to go into any specifics.

i see , ill look into going down that rd then ...

ive just rang network rail as near me we have a disused rail line that hasnt been used since i was a kid.

i asked her what would i need to gain permission to shoot rabbits along the line?

she asked for postcode , location etc.

and after 15 mins of explaining whos land it was on either side she asked me why i wanted to go down it?

i repeated to her its for shooting rabbits etc.

she said we would not giver permission to domestic entrance and if we did you would need to be trained in network rails procedures , we can give out 1 day permissions but only with a trained networks employee..

jeezzzzz talk about keeping me on the phone for a premium rate......

i hung up!!!

talk about a load of old red tape and pointless communication.....

why is it so hard just to get a free dinner?

I think you need to accept that you're going to get turned down a lot. A person the other day came on here saying he'd been looking for about two years and finally got permission.

Surprisingly, you'll find that it's your friends and family who hold the key to a patch of land. Just think how many people are connected to the people you know?

Lest you forget, you are at most 6 steps away from knowing anyone in the world

It's the hard way but for all of us it paid off in the end. Maybe farms aren't the way to go though, farmers will want the rabbits/pigeons etc hit hard, they know you'll struggle to make a real impact with an airgun.

Your better bet is to keep your eyes peeled as you're going around the area for where you see signs of rabbits then try and find out who owns it (ask at neighbouring properties etc). One of my permissions is 12acres of "pasture" which this guy owns but doesn't do anything with, crawling with rabbits which he'd like to keep a few of because they help keep the grass down but is fine with me taking them now and then... and to be honest I think the population was about to crash if it hadn't had a cull anyway as there were so many.

I met him one day while out walking the dog, we got talking and the subject turned to hunting (my dog's a black lab) and when I said I shoot rabbits he said he had this field and that I could help myself.

Keep trying, you will get some in the end.

something will come up. do you have basc insurance? it dosnt cost much and farmers will take you more seriously if you have insurance. large graveyards have problems with rabbits creating diggings which trip people up and digging under the grave stones. something will come dont worry. you could even put a poster up in your city hall which says something like this:

do you want FREE pest control?

if you want free pest control of rabbits, pigeons, squirrels, rats ect then cal me on xxxxxx xxxxx or speak to me face to face at 1, example road, exampleton.

Like its been said before dont just think of farms, I work a couple of bowling greens for rabbit control I use my BSA Super10 on them for obvious reasons don't think they would appreciate a 12g cutting there green up, I'M there at first light usually just before the green keeper, and I met him on our allotments, he has a plot as well lol

Go for your SG Certificate but be totally honest, clays is a good answer but what club? have you joined? where is it? they will know your taking the pee! Join a club and support shooting :good:

tell them as well as the above you intend to approach land owners, tenant farmers as well for permission you will be surprised how helpful the Police are, and could possibly provide a few farm names :good:

In my opinion Suffolk Police are the best, they are so helpful.

Above all be honest you will get your permissions but be patient!

You don't need to give a valid reason to own a shotgun licence. I could tell my FEO "I want to have a shotgun because I've always wanted one. I'll keep it in the cabinet and never use it." they will still grant the applcation.
