Dr_T
Need some help Gents. I've lost three of my hypaflap rods! Does anyone know where to order on the web a cheap length of rod to cut to length. I need both the thin and the wider types. Many thanks. Cranfield
Why not ring UKShootWarehouse and see if they can help out.
Dr_T
Why not ring UKShootWarehouse and see if they can help out. Thanks for the tip. The main reason for sourcing cheap lengths of rod is that I can see this happening in the future. Hence I would like to have a few in reserve. I'll check out some model hobby shops. activeviii
your local model shop :yp: i bought 4 lengths for the same price that one shooting shop tried to sell one rod for. the 4 lengths i bought did 8 wings. i make my own flappers so i needed some for the crow flappers as well as the pigeons. Cosd
UK Shootwarehouse supplies them cheaper than model shops sell rods, and they are the right diameter so the Hypers flap!

madsarmy
DrT I made a storage case out of a piece of 13mm copper pipe with some end caps. Keeps them safe & together.
Dr_T
Thanks everyone for your advice. I have ordered some 1.2mm and 1.5mm diameter rods from fleabay. The cheapest option is to buy some rods for float fishing construction. Come in multiples of 5 or 10. I'll either use Rawl plugs (smallest size) inserted into the wing end flaps or use heat-shrink to cap the rod ends. I'll report back once I have tried these out. Edited June 23, 2010 by Dr_T

Indeed, I had the rods in a protective plastic tube but the top had come off! I think I might take your advice and use some copper tubing and blank end-caps. A trip to the builder's merchant me thinks

Well folks, the rods came in the post this morning. 1.2mm carbon fibre rods work perfectly. It was tested against the other decoy using the one remaining original slim rod for comparison. I used a small yellow Rawl plug at each end of the wing flap so I don't have to cap each rod end. You need to experiment with the length of the replacement rod to obtain the right tension in the wing. If the rod is too long the wing will be under too much tension and will not 'flap' whilst rotating. Further improvements might be possible using even smaller diameter rods since, even using the original slim rods, the wings don't flap that well on still days at max rotation speed. I plan to purchase some 1.0mm fibre glass rods to try out. Another benefit might be that using smaller diameter rods, faster wing flapping might be achievable at lower rotation speeds and hence prolong battery life and still be attractive to the birds. Dr_T
dont suppose you could supply item number from fleabay for the rods cheers Chairman Gladly..it's ************. Fast delivery too. Items ordered on Wednesday evening, posted Thursday and arrived Saturday morning. I'm going to dip the clipped rod ends in Araldite to prevent the fibres from fraying over time. Edited June 26, 2010 by Cranfield Don't post eBay links on the Forum, I have PM'ed the information for you.
Cranfield
I would be wary of using too light a rod. Its my experience that using the HypaFlaps lighter rod thats supplied, in the lightest breeze, or speed up of the rotary, can make the decoy go quite manic and this can spook the birds. I use the heavier rods all the time now and get a better action IMO.

Dr_T
DR T , i hope the combine doesnt find your lost rods :yp: I don't suppose those small rods will do any damage whatsoever -that's if I lost them in the field?!. In any case I have plenty of spares now to use! Edited July 15, 2010 by Dr_T
