Dempy
I have a black lab puppie coming in 4 weeks time and intended building her a kennel in the garden. I am now coming up against comlaints against this from the wife and kids who want it to live indoors. I have stressed the fact to them that is to be a working dog, but what do you guys think? The puppie was born and lives in kennels along with its mother. If you want to train a dog and it be a working dog, should it be outside od can you get away with it being in the house? Guest stiv24
No. I have 2 ESS who both live in and they are exceptional gundogs. It is possible to have a cracking dog who lives inside, you just have to have very clear rules....... for the family as well as the dog

Pidge
My Munsters have always lived in - in fact they all sleep in our bedroom! It doesn't stop them being good working dogs. Just make sure you have somewhere, like a crate, where the puppy can go, so that it's not pestered all the time if you have younger children. al4x
simple answer is if you want a top level dog then they are all live out however if you are having one dog who is a shooting companion as well as worker and family pet then you have the slight trade off and they live in. Personally mine lives in and I accept that it may not be quite as good as some however I do get a guard dog and companion the rest of the time
Lloyd90
The dog picks up less bad habits when kennel'd. Although if its kennel'd and the kids just pester it in the garden as much as they would in the house then there's not much difference, I learned the hard way. My lab would retrieve brilliant but then just spit the dummy as my feet because of other people throwing stuff for her and then not taking it off her when she brought it back, took a while to teach her to hold onto the things! Gladly I got it sorted! :yp:

The dog picks up less bad habits when kennel'd. neither quite right. An indoors dog can play just as well outdoors with purpose (i.e., working as a gundog) as any, and the only "bad habits" picked up are what you allow or disseminate. They are creatures of habit, it's your job to see that the habits they get into as a creature are conducive to working as a gundog. That's all outdoors. Indoors, the habits you get them into are obedience, manners and "tuning into" your voice and posture as their guiding light. MG
AlistairB
Mine live outside and they're not particularly good gun dogs (my fault, not theirs), but having them outside does give you a bit more freedom in the house and you dont spend all the time brushing dog hair off stuff. Less things to go wrong in ways like this when the dog is in a kennel
