Hayfever

Recommended Posts

Hi guys

I was out shooting the other day but all i seem to be doing is sneezing and rubbing my eyes due to the hayfever I suffer from at this time of year.

Ive tried taking all the different types of allergy tablets and even the nasel spray but nothing seems to work.

I was wondering if anybody knows of anything alse that can stop it such as an injection etc?

Thanks

In over 30 years of suffering the only thing that has done the trick is a Kennalog injection.

It is steroid based and not handed out willy nilly but after I explained to my GP that I literally cannot enjoy my way of life at this time of year he agreed to give me a maximum of two of these injections per annum. Lasts about 5 - 6 weeks for me.

I suffer too. The steroid injections are something I've always avoided due to the side effects (brittle bones to name one that sticks in my mind!) although it's said they do work wonders. My doctor says he'll only do them for things like weddings when people need a one off perfect cure. I actually don't take anything and just slog it out these days, all the pills are naff.

There is a woman in London who claims to be able to cure it. I think you're looking at several hundred pounds for a treatment but to me if it works that's money well spent. She's got lots of praise on her site and says that if it doesn't work you can keep returning for repeat treatments until it does. To me that means she'd be bankrupt by now if it didn't please most people?

Whatever you do leave your eyes alone! Rub them and you're doomed! If they itch just let them carry on because as soon as you touch it they only get worse. It's tough but after ten years of gardening I've learned to control the urge to rub them. It seems it's getting progressively better for me. I'm hoping to get to London next winter though to waste some money because I recon it's worth the chance.

Things I've found to help are Vaseline up your nose (just rub it around the inside so the pollen sticks to it on the way in), a wet hat (cooling my head down helps, and I'm sure the moisture must catch some pollen too?) and sun glasses (when I stand in the shade my sneezing is reduced for some reason, so I shade my eyes when I can?).

I'm sorry to hear you suffer with it. It can be a bloody nightmare sometimes. I've done several 100 yard+ crawls to stalk Deer/Foxes only to sneeze as I settle for the shot. It's near tear inducing some days.

I also suffer, had the Kennalog injection before, its very good not a runny eye or sniffle until the day it runs out  however the problem is convincing the doctor ,believe me ive tried everything to convince the doc,but not a chance  will only give the jab if your going operational, and suffer really badly, all they did for me was to increase my tabs(Telfast) from 120mg to 180mg, and i also use the nasal sprays, but find the eye drops a waste of time

It can be a real pain, especially when out shooting, however i find one of the best ways to reduce the pollen getting into the eyes,is to wear a pair of wrap around shooting glasses  these act as a pretty good barrier,as long as you keep your fingers away from your eyes, because once you start to rub,you wont be able to stop  BB

as njc says, the vaseline round the nose and round my eyes does it for me, then about every hour i use a wetwipe to remove it and then put fresh on (mind you i did get a worried look of my mate in the hide last year when i produced a small tin of vasaline out of my pocket!) as he says never never rub your eyes.. although you feel like rubbing them on the barb wire fence

I have not suffered so bad for the last few years since i had sinus op/broken nose operation, but this year i have been sneezing, itchy eyes,if i were you i would take the advise already given,ie;aviod pollen as it rises and falls morn/evening,wear beany hat, sunglasses, use sea spray nasal wash  ,take wet flannel in a bag to wipe your face to remove pollen, shower as soon as you get in to remove pollen, take LOCAL honey, get prescription antihistimen tabs and nasal spray, have also heard about some wood oils are meant to help although this was a customer that was a herbalist.

Out of all these i have tried, the nasal wash works the best for me

I suffer something terrible as well mate. I went to get the injection but the doctors have point blank refused, said its not even allowed on the NHS due to the side effects and that the only way i could get it was privately. I take one of the piriteze tablets every morning, and aslong as i never miss one im usually not too bad. I also got these eye drops from the doctors which are used for allergies and ive found that if the hayfever is bad and my eyes are streaming, a couple of drops sort them out within minutes.

I feel your pain mate as its bloody terrible.
