this is probably a bit off topic but in the book 'shootings weirdest days' there is an account of a guy some 100 years back who had trained 4 pigs to retrieve shot game. Well worth a read

You are correct, and the most famous hunting pig was called "slut".

nice to see someone else using them as gun dogs

i trained arnie, my first rottweiler, to flush and retrieve for me. got a lot of **** taking at the time for it but it worked, he'd flush rabbits out and chase them into the open, as soon as i'd shout "fire!" he'd stop and sit down so i could get a clean shot, then pick it up and (usually) bring it to me, though on a few occasions he decided that it was his turn to have a share of the spoils :welcomeani:

I have had dozens of Rottys over the years, the most famous one was the one trained as a sheepdog,

that bitch travelled all over the country with me to different shows. She also represented the breed in Crufts in discover dogs, yet I did'nt have papers for her.

sheepdog? never seen them done for that, though i've seen videos of them being used to herd cattle. just shows how versatile the breed are :welcomeani: and id love to know how you got away with that at crufts!!

i got a cross breed a month or so ago, a golden retriever/rottweiler cross, 13 weeks(ish) now. she's the size of a rottie pup but a bit finer featured, got rottie markings but instead of black and tan she's dark gold and light fawn. going to try and train her to the gun, seems intelligent enough so far, fingers crossed

As far as I know Rotties were bred as herding dogs, or to accompany shepherds and drovers. As such they will readily work for the handler.

I used to have a GSD bitch that would flush and retrieve. One beater's day she was the only dog amongst a line of 8 walking guns, and during the day flushed and retrieved 54 pheasants. In snow too.

I also had three working sheepdogs that I trained to the gun. They were all different; one worked like a spaniel, one worked like a pointer and the other was a canine bulldozer. No cover was too dense for Kyle. The looks I got when I turned up at a shoot for the first time with two or three sheepdogs. But I always got asked back.

The bitch I refer to won the Rescue dog of the year and Personality dog of the year, a genuine Rotty that represented the breed during the hue and cry over the dangerous dogs act, even had a personal PR agent to promote how gentle a breed they were.

Sponsered at the time by Eukanuba, I still have the pics, also one with the bitch and Rolf Harris.

lovely looking dog mate, shame they get the rep they do as there a fantastic breed i've always wanted one but never been practical for me i'll get one eventually though, apparently the germans use them for various forms of hunting but i would think its more boar and stuff like that.

my grandad had a patterdale x fox called rusty. it was the best ratting dog i have ever seen that to would run through any brambles ect. my grandad owned a farm, he used to let it out in a morning and it would go ratting all day on its own lol.

one day he whistled it back but it didnt come so he went to look for it.

he was in the barn were there was a pile of metel sheets. a rat was under there and he'd been scratching that long under it he'd slashed all his legs. there was blood every were and he was still going for it. soon as he lifted the sheet BANG it was dead, then it limped back to the farm house.

it also jumped out the truck window at about 40 because it seen a cat lol. boy that dog hated cats
