I know it's been done to death, but:

I got my first fox last wed, it's tail has been in meths for a week, now that i've dried it off and the smell of meth has gone is there anything else I should do to it?

Should I fill it with salt or anything or just let it be?

Thanks,

Toby :balloon:

Congratualtions on your first fox. I have never tried Meths to cure skins etc; my usual formula is tablesalt, borax, alum and water mixed together, I then leave the skin in this solution for a few weeks (stirring daily). It probably wouldn't do any harm to rub a bit of salt or borax into the inside of the tail.

I`ve left tails in meths for about 6months they came out well and after being washed and dried they were OK but I`m afraid after 1yr they fell to bits, I am looking for a diferent cure as meths doesn`t seem to work to well.

Snowdonia Taxidermy Supplies sell a tanning solution (mix powder with water) It's brilliant. Just soak the tail, or any other skin in the liquid for 24-48 hours, and then wash it. I've had some great results, and the fur does not fall out if it's looked after. Google their name for address/phone number details.

I find snowdonia quite expensive. If you want a cheaper option look at my previous post and buy the ingredients to make your own solution.

I paid around £17.00 for the chemicals, which, when mixed with water, gave me almost 2 gallons of tanning liquid. It can be used a few times, depending on the size of the fur being tanned.

I personally think that it's quite a reasonable price to pay.

Ok fair enough but not if you have to get the stuff shipped to Northern Ireland. I was able to pick up all my ingredients for about £10 and I still haven't used it all.

Yes !! :hmm:

Fox brushes can be easily dried without any chemicals, skin it, hang it up and leave it somewhere airy and cool/warm :/
