al4x
yup back to the original question and worth pointing out if you have a look in the sporting pictures malkiesrow there is a nice red stag shot with a .243, just filled my renewal in and put in for one and have to say think I'll probably get rid of my .223 in favour of it. Though I use it a lot on foxes I'm not sure I can justify keeping it though it does shoot very well so its a definite dilema

Nothing wrong with them realy on the lamp just the .243" reaches further during the day when the shots can be longer with less drift and legal for all deer just a pity i can't use 95 grn bullets in Scotland. I think the only downside is barrel life compared to .223 it's misrable but 1500 foxes and deer makes a heck of a big pile. I have had great clean kills with the 95 grain Nosler b/tip on foxes though when i have been on the 100 grain Pro hunters in stalking in Scotland Charlie often gets back up and runs a bit further before expiring (common with all heavier constucted deer bullets, my 7mm does the same at times) the 95 grn b/t suprisingly is not that damaging on the venison as its reputation and to my mind the perfect compromise bullet, yeah 70-75 might be better but i know the drift, drop of the former very well and don't even need to change zero etc
groach1234
I've heard a lot of good reviews on the 6.5 55 but one chap I spoke with this week told me he used to have one and got rid after it took him 4 shots intotal on a Red stag. He also seemed to be saying there is a delay in the round engaging with the rifleing? Can anyone shed any light on this comment. BTW the chap is a very experienced shot and ex police. He now uses a .25 06 and a .243. Don't listen to it. I bought a 6.5x55 and went red stalking last week shot 3 stags with it and when it hit them in the right spot they dropped although one was a second shot off a slightly pulled shot (only 2 inches from dead on the spot at 200 yards) Anyway i got chatting to the stalker and he said in the rut he has seen a stag carry on after having 2 shots from a 30-06 to through shoulder and engine room so in the right (or wrong from stalkers perspective) conditions a stag can go on with enough adrenalin. Also were all 4 shots in the right place? Also it seems your FEO is a bit of a *** when it comes to calibers. dodeer
After shooting plenty of deer each year (250+) both wild and park ones I would say my favourite clas are .243, .25-06 and .30-06. Best place I have found to buy them is Ivythorn Sporting in Somerset. Look @ his guns on guntrader.
