The Beater
If pigeons are feeding on it or flighting over it in good numbers give it a try. Might be better if there was spell of frosty weather. Not worth setting up on anything if theirs just the odd bird knocking about tho. Will Beasley
We've got some chopped already round here as a couple of the small shoots only went until Xmas. Obviously they prefer it when its chopped as its easier to land in and lots more of the cobs will be exposed and some of the corn will have slipt off the cob in the process too but we've found some good sport on standing Maize as well. Like someone else said if they look keen chances are you'll pick up some action.
Highlander
Excellent stuff. If it's been used as game cover and after the season ends and the farmers/shooters cut it down and (hopefully) leave it on the ground which most seem to do you can have some terrific sport. Last year we had about 1/2 an acre of it that I could see from my office window and once the keeper had cut it the pigeons went mad on it for about 7-10 days. A good 1000 birds were on it constantly. I've earmarked any that I have on my permissions and can't wait to get at it. Best when it's cut but can work when standing just not so well. One thing though...either check with the keeper first or keep off until the end of the game season.
30-6
About 2 years ago, had a maize field which had failed badly for the farmer (rain and wind), so when cut left a lot of cobs on the floor. Shot it regular from about Oct to Jan with excellent shooting - the only time I've ever run out of cartridges on one day. Had pigeons, crows, rooks, jackdaws everytime on it, wherever you have maize you have extra rats in the hedges.
