pegasus bridge
i have got a few different types - motorola 8km jobbies to cheapo binatone 4km, the more expensive ones have lots of sub channels (rather than 8 ) - usefull if the area has a lot of activity - where i shoot does not seem to - so most of the time i use the cheap ones; i brought some hi capacity li-ion aaa batteries and they now last for a couple of days use beforehand, a few years ago walkie talkies would often not work for more than a couple of hundred yards - but (and someone with more knowledge than me might explain this) the new 'cheap' ones have a good range. i find them very usefull when shooting with others around an area - had some good shots when a mate has told me a pigeon was winging its way in from behind me. David BASC
Most , if not all, of the cheap units are not waterproof. Having said that I have had a pair for 4 seasons now with no problems - but i have not dropped them into a pubddle yet! Range is a bit of an issue with the cheap modales- great if there is a clear filed of view, at least a mile or more, fine in woodland - earth banks though can cut reception drastically. Colster
Most of the free to use PMR ones work in much the same way. One of the best I had for range was some BT Freeway FM's which worked for a kilometre over a hill but currently I have some of the standard Freeway's which after about 300yards start to struggle unless you can maintain clear line of sight. Here's some pros and cons I've picked up Oregon Scientific have their call button as a double press of the talk button - surprisingly easy to do so instead of whispering a quiet message to your shooting buddy you set off a loud ringing tone on both/all walkie talkies BT Freeway/Freeway FM - both prone to changing channels or turning themselves off when in your pocket so good practice to lock the keypads when using them. The Freeway also has a "roger beep" that you can't turn off, not a problem for me as I use a headset with them. Binatone MR620 - has a very handy little torch built in and iirc the charger will charge standard rechargeable batteries as well as their own battery packs. Personally I'd stick to ones that have a charging pod with them (or the 620's) as it saves the hassle of removing the batteries to charge them. David Hi David, what type are yours, presently using motorola 300 a bit too heavy, but range is very good few miles at times, not water proof though regards dh Edited September 10, 2010 by discreet hunter

Gully
I've got a question about the PMR type - why does no-one make a car unit that looks like a CB - i.e. hardwired in with a seperate mic? I'd have one of those in my Landy as I'm alwasy losing the walkie talkies.
David BASC
mine are Binatone Terrain 550, think from memory they cost aobut £50 the pair. Batterly life is good - mine last at least 12 hours before recharge. David
al4x
we've some dodgy ship to short things that work well but you can guarantee on a days beating that somebodys will cease to work causing the keeper to go slightly red in the face and much amusement between everyone else who has one

At least one side should be at sea.
al4x
I had vaguely heard that fortunately they aren't mine and we're a long way from the sea

I'd have one of those in my Landy as I'm alwasy losing the walkie talkies. I agree with this but dont use them so offen these days, but i used to put them in a phone holder on the dash with a speaker mic plugged in the top . The only down side was no constant vehicle power to them and also the antenna being in the vehicle not external ! Some times I use my scanner for listening with an external scanner antenna but obviously cant transmit on it. Wish there were more shooters used PMR as then it could be used as a replacement for cb and you can speak to other shooters out in the very local area so you can share info on how your getting on etc. PMRs used were trialed on the shoot i beat on but the old boys managed to get confused with them and struggled to opperate them belive it or not. So they just stopped using them and they are still equally disorganised and in a mess with mobile phones ! Shame as I am a bit of a kit / gadget lover and like using radios where I get the chance ! lol
MC
I had vaguely heard that fortunately they aren't mine and we're a long way from the sea And that is one very good reason for not using them. It doesn't matter who owns them. You need to be licenced to operate one as well as the vessell they belong to must also be licenced. The frequencies are monitored globally so it doesn't matter where abouts you are. All services will monitor them at some point not just the coastguard. PMR is comletely different. Imperfection
A company i once used to work for issued us with Motorola units and we never had any trouble with them despite being dropped dozens of times and also into water too.Their range was fantastic, but the only let down was they played havoc with 'Clifford' car alarms and were a bit chunky. al4x
they have been on the go about 5 seasons now only because one of the guns has a sailing boat, well quite a big one so I'd guess its on his head. We have the normal motorolla jobbies on the other shoot I beat on, not as good but ok as long as you avoid the channels the local taxis use. That could be quite handy, if you forget your lunch call up for a take away. If you get ****** afterwards call up a lift home
