foxbuster
Evening all, went out to bag a few bunnies tonight. My first shot didnt sound 'right' to me but i wasnt sure as i was concentrating on the shot so much, but my mate who was lamping confirmed this. The round didnt seem to break sound barrier, just a kind of dull bang/crack. Remember reading a post where someone had a misfire and actually had a round left in the barrel so i removed bolt and had a look down it-nowt in it. Anyway my next shot on a rabbit (80yrds or so) and i missed twice!! I was out with the gun sunday night and it was sighted in perfect, was dishing out headshots to over 100yrds with ease so im pretty sure the misses wernt down to me. Just thinking would that dodgy first round dirtied my barrel enough to cause inaccuracy?? When i got home i had a proper look down the barrel and it was pretty ****ty. Ammo being used is Hornady V-max if this is any help. This is going to bug me all night now-cant wait till tomorrow to get some range work done to check it out. Make the most of your opportunity and send the remaining ammo back to Hornady. If it's found to be faulty, you'll probably get a load of free ammo. It really sounds like a bad batch. I would not shoot a single round of that ammo, or any other HMR ammo from the same shop until they've received a new batch.
hawkeye
Have you been using the blue tips, i tried them and could not get them to group in less than 4" at 100yds. My mate then gave me a box or red tip that i had always used and they clover leafed at 100yds.. Both were 17gr V MAX Hornady... Question is why when they are both the same except for tip colour will the red group and the blue not ? My HMR is a Anschutz...
al4x
clean the gun and have another go, I know a few CZ's that when they get dirty enough group badly, clean and put a few fouling shots through and they are back to being bang on. Sending a batch back for a single miss fire is a little excessive Edited September 22, 2010 by al4x

hawkeye
My gun had been cleaned and even the mod.. blues like a shot gun ....reds clover leaf.. i have 16 box's of them now to get rid of spoke to the local gun dealer the other day and he sells a lot of the blue tips and he reckons people love them.. I hate the bloody things cannot wait for him to get some red tip in....
deputy dog
No different using Blue tips or red tips. All the difference is the colour of the tip and nothing else. All this twadle about which is better, their both the same. I'v used blue tip for over a year now and not one miss fire and tight grouping at 100yrds. Went out yesterday after cleaning out my barrel and put a few fouling shots through it. Took a magpie and Jay out to 160yrds. Not saying it not a bad batch but as one post suggested. Clean the barrel out and like myself put a few fouling shots through it and then check it at a target if you like. Would seem a little excessive to return an whole batch for one offish sounding shot. Perhaps it just needs a good cleaning. DD
foxbuster
Cheers for the info guys. Its the red tips im using-other than this one dodgy round the rifle loves them (annie 1517 14'' barrel). Easily getting 1'' at 100yrds. I've given the barrel a good cleaning and im out to check it tomorrow (didnt get chance on wed). Fingers crossed it'l be back form.
jamie g
the bluetips are in the hm2 rifles. hornady must have got to many of them in. as the hm2 isnt such a bigger seller as the hmr i guess they just used the tips up in the hmr cases. there is no difference in them. the reason there not shooting well in some rifles is not down to the tip. but due to poor making at the factroy imo. alot of hmr ammo at the moment seams to be very poorly put togeather. thats why your getitng inconsistant groups
