sixhills 69
Hi Has anybody used Holts Auctions by using the sealed bid method is it worth bidding or just a waste of money as there are little details on the guns they sell as to condition? Any input would be greatfull Thanks

Mungler
Auctions are normally where dealers turn out stock they can't sell in a shop. Caveat emptor 'n all that

Paddy Galore!
Whatever you buy it has to be in proof, doesn't mean it has to work tho. Good luck if you decide to go ahead
TGBMAverick
Hi Has anybody used Holts Auctions by using the sealed bid method is it worth bidding or just a waste of money as there are little details on the guns they sell as to condition? Any input would be greatfull Thanks I am registered with Holts and have bid on lots in the Sealed Bid sales (unsuccessfull so far!!). Sealed bid auction is very much a lottery. If you know the maximum you are prepared to pay then OK to bid, but descriptions are very brief (but will include Proof status) and unless you attend one of the viewing days you are very much bidding blind. You can inquire for more information on the lots but replies can sometimes take a while on the items at the lower end of the auction valuation. They give priority to high end value items and do not always have them available to provide details requested until closer to the auction date. One other thing you need to note is the commission charges on the hammer price - Holts charge 22.5% + VAT = 26.4% and some items marked as imports will have an additional 5% or 17.5% VAT charged on the hammer price. On top of that, if you are successful in a bid, unless you are prepared to drive to Norfolk you will incur shipping (don't know this cost) and RFD handling charges (around £20). So bidding £100 on the wrong item will could actually cost you £165 + shipping. So adjust your maximum bid price accordingly.
Vince Green
I've bid on a couple of guns recently but have been outbid. The big problem is getting there to pick up your purchase unless you are local.

TGBMAverick
"I don't uderstand what it meens by proofed but not working?" Just because a firearm has all the relevant proof marks dosn't mean it is still operational. Firearms are not re-proofed every time they are sold. All proofing indicates is that at the time the proof test was carried out the barrel and action have successfully withstood a proof round without major malfunction. That proof test could have been carried out decades ago. Every time a presure bearing part is replaced in theory the firearm should be re-tested though I do not know how religiously this is carried out.
