Blunderbuss
2-3 months is no where near long enough. 6 months easy. Drinkable after 3, better after 6 Although I've been told its better to decant it after about 6 as if you leave the sloes in for much longer than that, they can impart a bitter taste. Billy.
Might sound silly/amateurish/naive, but can the turning effect be increased by a little shake between turns?

J@mes
I did mine at 3 months last year, although I am drinking my last bottle at the minute which still has the sloes in it and I haven't noticed any adverse effects of doing this. It went down very well at our shoot last week!

Bleeh
Handy tip to everyone!. Want to accelerate the speed your Sloe Gin takes to make? - can't be bothered to shake it every day!? Then just put it in the back of your car for several months!, let the vibrations do the work for you.

Doc Holliday
I've tried pricking the sloes at first when I started making mine then someone told me it didn't make any difference so I tired a small batch without pricking first to see how it compared to the ones I did ***** and it made no difference to the end result so now I don't even bother. They get a quick wash then into the jars with sugar and gin. I'd be interested to know how the sloe gin with demerera turns out, that does sound very interesting. Most folk don't seem to want the world to know what quantities of what they use so I'll break the trend. For every litre of gin I'll use approx 800g of sloes to 400g granulated sugar. I don't like mine too sweet and much prefer the taste of the sloes to come through. I'll turn and shake the mixture until the sugar has disolved then shake every so often to release more flavour from the sloes, sampling as I go. Just bottled my first lot (2.5 litres) last night and made up another litre with some late sloes I found so will be interesting to see how it compares. Out opf interest, how much cinnamon do you use to what volume of gin?
Billy.
I've tried pricking the sloes at first I didn't pick mine. They are getting enough of a beating in the jars and the ripped skin from taking them off the bush will be enough to let the gin get in. So, no one answered my question; Thorough shaking, yes or no? Billy, I give mine a good old shake every day for 3-4 weeks, then just once a week or whenever I remember after that. It works for me
