kyska
Hi All, I'm hoping to refinish my stock on my hmr, but have stumbled at the first hurdle. I can get both screws out from the trigger guard, but the one under the breech just will not budge, I'm not a weak bloke, it just won't move a mil. Any ideas? I can get both screws out from the trigger guard, but the one under the breech just will not budge, I'm not a weak bloke, it just won't move a mil. Any ideas? Try a little bit of wd40 and allow it to soak in Try a little bit of heat, use some thing like a soldering iron on the screw head, let it warm up and try Try tapping the head/handle of the screw driver with a hammer as you go to loosen, a bit like an impact screwdriver driver if not go to the gym, man up a bit grit your teeth and try harder, failing that i'm sure your mrs could do it
Paddy Galore!
use a bigger screwdriver? careful you don't chew the head up, they're quite soft, a T bar screwdriver works best, and as above, try some heat.
fluke2
Put the screwdriver in the screw head and give it a few sharp whacks with the hammer this should loosen any crud in the threads then try loosening it again, use a pair of pliers or grips on the screwdriver shaft for extra leverage but be careful you could snap the screw. kyska
And another problem.... How do I take the butt pad off if there are no screws holding it on? I imagine I'm going to have to mask it somehow before the nitromors, will nitromors eat masking/gaffer/duck tape?

I imagine I'm going to have to mask it somehow before the nitromors, will nitromors eat masking/gaffer/duck tape? It will but it wont go up in flames or explode instantly or anything so just wipe it off the tape if you get any onto it. Is the plate stuck on or something? im sure they guys on here will have a few tips for getting it off which probably is you best bet. snowz
either mask it off and be carefully not to mark or damage it or carefully remove it with a sharp blade and then re glue back on after

Hornet 6
It is screwed and glued, leave it on and work round it. (screws are hidden, all that is on show are two small slits) Neil.

kyska
Which model 452 do you have?? A varmint I believe, I'll look to see of there are small slots for the screws, it'd make it a lot easier to remove it.

I must be going mad, or you are, the Varmint has a wooden stock and 2 screws hold on the butt plate!

I may be going mad, I'll have a look now as the stock is off, its a beautiful stock, but with a rubber/synthetic type of butt pad. Give me a sec. Edit...I'm not sure what it is now then, it has no screws. I'll put a pic up tomorrow, just charging my battery. Is yours original or has it already had work, and someone fitted a different butt plate? This is my 452 American, which I have had some work done on, the old pad was held on by 2 screws and so is the new one!

kyska
OK plan made, I've masked off the butt pad/plate. I'm going to use nitromors Remove it with a steel pan scourer, sounds harsh, but it seems to be the right thing to do from advice from a cabinent maker, not one of the wire wool ones, one of the bundles of wire. It says on the nitromors to wash down with white spirit to 'stop the grain from lifting'....does anyone know what this means? Does it mean it'll make the grain more obvious or reduce the grain effect? Then I'm going to oil it, I don't want it too dark, so I'll see how it goes. Does anyone have a 452 stock for sale.........
