Geo
Hi, I have recently done a bit of informal clay shooting and having enjoyed it I am now in the process of getting started properly. I have already learnt a lot from this website but have one query. Do I have to have my cabinet on the wall before I can get my licence , or just show the visiting officer where I intend to fix it ( I have an inside cupboard with masonry walls which would be an ideal place for it ) I intend to submit my licence application within the next week but don't want it to be rejected due to my lack of knowledge so if I need to get one I had better sort it out quickly! Thanks
ste12b
Hi, I believe you will need a cabinet before they will issue your lic, otherwise you will have no where to store them . However, some forces suggest that you put your app in and wait for them to look at it first, so if your initial checks make you unsuitable you have not wasted your money. IKNIGHT167
I fitted mine before my visit and then it was just a case of the officer visiting once.

Thanks Hi Geo, There is no need to have a cabinet fitted, all they will do is come back when you ask them and before you purchase a gun simples. J@mes
I fitted mine before my visit and then it was just a case of the officer visiting once. same here, why make the guy come round twice? not sure on anyone else's patch, but my FEO is flat out all the time! HDAV
No need to have cabinet before application or on grant but you must have one (or agreed storage) before buying a gun. I Waited to check location with FEO and wanted to make sure I would get SGC before buying one so i did FEO brought SGC round when he came to check cabinet. As long as they can't pull it off the wall they are happy.
Cosmicblue
Given the thorough process required to get a cert, the storage cabinet side of things is a bit feeble. During the initial FAO interview I was advised (told) where a cabinet should be mounted (and how - i.e. flush against the wall, cut the skirting board etc). I purchased a cabinet and screwed it to the wall just like the FAO said (he was a very decent chap I have to say). I then went and bought a gun - thinking the gun shop would hold the weapon until my FAO had inspected my storage facility. Nope, 'cash n carry', the local licensing office receives a fax notifying them of the puchase from the dealer. 2 months went by and I hadn't heard a squeak so I rang the licensing office and said 'did you know I now have a gun - do you want to inspect my cabinet?', a further 3 months elapsed before it was inspected. I guess the logic is that having vetted one as a responsible citizen then the proper storage responsibility aspect is a given.
mad1
I fitted mine before my visit and then it was just a case of the officer visiting once. same here i asked on here for advise on where to put it . so the f.l.o. only needed to come out once just trying to keep them happy

It is nothing to do with the RFD if you have a cabinet or not. You have to advise your region of gun purchases/sales within 7 days! ATB! Being objective (rather than objectionable ) and given the intense focus on the things (guns) we need to use to partake in our sport in recent months it strikes me that this area needs tightening up - pardon the pun but it's a bit hit n miss' isn't it? An awful lot of Firerarms legislation is pointless, contradictory, nonsensical and interpreted differently in different areas. Firearms legislation needs a major overhaul, but that does not necessarily mean tightening up the law!....wondering a bit off topic now perhaps..... garjo
Agree there are inconsistencies - surely the best bet is to advise a newbie (as one myself) that cabinet is needed etc
HDAV
It is best to inform correctly, I would rather the FEO advise on placement than anyone else.
